I have the 4.7L powerplant also. In the past on all of my vehicles I have always tried to change out the oil the first time at 1K and then every 3K thereafter.

I don't know if it is due to getting older or what but, for the Tundra I decided to follow the mfr recommendations and change it every 5K - so that is what I have done. I have had 8 oil changes now b/c my miles are just over 41K.
