What oil/grade are you using?

I know many of you change your own oil so wondering what the general thoughts are on this. My manual says to run 0-20 oil for the 5.7L. After looking at a few stores, I realize this oil is almost nonexistent. I’m up for my first oil change and wondering what oil I should use. I’ve always used Mobile 1 5-30 (synthetic) in all my other vehicles and would like to do the same with my new Tundra. As a rule of thumb, it’s not usually good to run synthetic oil in a new engine during the break-in period, so wondering what other Tundra owners think about this. I’m due for my first oil change and already have my filter, just need to get the oil now.

Dan

Dan, as you said, the manual (as well as the oil filler cap) says use only 0W-20 or 5W-20 dino or synthetic oil. Personally, I am using Mobil 1 5W-20, which you can find at most any WalMart in 5 quart jugs for slightly less than $22 per jug. It takes 7.5 quarts (filter is OEM and at this point must come from Yoda). Everything I have read is synthetic is OK at first oil change, whether at 1000 miles or 5000 miles or anything in-between. Finally, my dealer's service manager (as well as several other members) have said changing the oil the first time before 5000 miles is a waste of time and money. Obviously your call!

I have 5w30 Mobil 1 in mine. I have use it for years in all my vehicles. My first oil change was at 1000 miles just to be safe. I usually pull some sort of trailer with my truck whenever it's on the highway. Thats why I went with the heavier weight oil.

Whether you put OW20 or 5W20, it doesn't matter. At operating temp they are the same viscosity

But, I put Mobil 5W20 because I got it cheap and have 25 quarts of it laying around the garage!

That is true at operating temp. But the startup can cause a lot of wear on an engine if the oil isn't flowing properly. And up North, you guys need the thinner oil to get it flowing at startup during those cold winters. That is why they recommend 0w20 up North. But 5w20 will work too.

Angry 5w20

I bought Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5W20 oil at Walmart for just under $19 per 5 quarts. Of course, now I have to go back for the other 2 1/2 quarts. Next I have to get the filter but those are available from online sources.

Much more important to think about oil vis when the engine is at less than operating temp rather than at normal temp.
