Volant Intake-REVIEW

Well got my kit...thanks to the guys on here for the kickass deal!

ok total review...just my $.02 and PLEASE realize i own a shop..i build bikes/motor/tune for a living..im not some 18yr old kid, nor some 60yr old compunerd. check out my website if you think we are not skilled enough (EDR Performance - Online)

Ok here goes...

Price: Great from Socal
Shipping: "ok" took longer than i thought, but they did communicate after i asked on here

Looks: KILLER! really nice looking system, HOWEVER for this kinda $$ the plastic intake tube is cheasy! Should be alloy at least IMO

Sound: Amazing..LOVE IT. i think too loud for whiny guys that like saabs and maybe not performance. but i think great

Butt Dyno: nice. I would guess about 15rwhp..definetly noticeable. feels sharper on roll ons...maybe...maybe a bit less right off the line..but freeway much better passing. Honestly folks i aint making it up..YOU WILL NOTICE the added benefit in hp/tq!!! MUCH more so than an exhaust will make for sure...

Only bitch:
Fit. It was "ok" again, this is NOT a cheap ebay/china kit, so i expected it to fit better than the $99 one i bought for my hummer..but it didnt.

1. The bolt that holds box down inside, under filter they supply is WAY too long (luckily we put it on in our shop and we got a million metric bolts)

2. The fit against the hole in fender well not matched up good.

3. The oem top cover over manifold does not go down all the way now, the cut out for the intake tube is not lined up with the intake tube that volant uses.

overall i'd give this kit

9/10 for performance
8/10 for looks
6/10 for fit (again, taking into consideration the price)

Hope this helps folks..

For such an expensive piece of plastic with a crazy filter, you'd think it would fit better. Have you done anything else, performance wise, to your truck?

Good review...

You should pass this information on to Volant...

They have a reputation of making things right.

Great write up Eric.

As far as the fitment goes, I have since emailed this write up to Volant's lead tech. and I expect some sort of response either Monday or Tues.

Why they chose the plastic tube, the answer is easy. It's not made of metal because metal (in most cases) doesn't even come close to dissapating heat nearly as quickly as plastic. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're getting your added performance gains from this intake because of 2 major reasons: #1) more air, #2) more colder air. If the tube was made of metal you'd be getting #1, but definitely not #2, which would seriously hinder the unbiased HP gains you've recently confirmed. Even with a Stainless Steel Tube (alla AirForce One Intakes) you're not maximizing the possible HP gains.

Ship times have been and will continue to be given everday or every other day. They are only posted in the GB thread, however not in the thread you inquired about.

Thank you again Eric for your time, purchase and support of TundraTruckz.com and SoCal Motorsports.

John

Great write up,

Like Chicks said Volant is known for tweaking their system for better fitments, So hopefully they'll make some strides on the product quality!

Well.....now the review from the garden variety novice.... Got mine in Friday ..installed Saturday,,,, Great instructions ... Reading everything twice I still got it done with only one snaffu....I installed the MAF sensor in backwards (after the warning in the instructions) BTW if you do this it will start ok but not idle..just die..
my fit to the out side was good,, no leaks that I could detect...but I kept pressure
towards it while I tightened the well bolt...

I really was not preparred for the sound.... kinda like taking the air cleaner off dads old four barrrel ... but more air means more sound..

I can feel the diff when I get on it 3K and up but there seems to be slower throttle response below 3K ...maybe just me,,,

I believe that we need a good exhaust to maximize the effect...gotta get that air out !!

I installed mine this morning, I think the sound makes you think it's faster than it really is. I did a 0-100mph video and actually lost 3 tenths of a second. Could be the weather or because I had the a/c on this time. I'm really bummed if I lost some speed, I'll run again later this afternoon when it cools a little and I'll make sure to turn the a/c off. Did y'all disconnect your battery like the instructions stated? Maybe my system is just relearning or something like that.....

As for the sound, I love it! Sounds like someone installed an exhaust system under my hood. It's pretty quite under normal driving but once you get into it a little bit it sounds pretty cool. I'll post up some videos later

with 27 more hp no a/c or air temp is gonna counter that !! I too felt a power loss below 3K.. I would like to hear from more guys..who did the install
