This sounds like way back when in the 70's they were doing this to gas engines. at first mfg did cheap things that made the car run worse hoping people would complain and government would rescind. well the japanese come along and make better power meeting the emissions calling them out and now the american engines are far better than they use to be.
I think the use of biofuel and some ingenuity will solve this problem
