I don't see in any of the literature that they are "pinned for studs"
What I mean is that the tread has to have the holes for studs to be inserted.
No holes = no studding.

Misc info on studs.
There's about 7 different size studs.
The tire manufactures list what size to use in which tire
Only new tires should be studded. This is because dirt gets in the stud holes and prevents the studs from "seating" in & will likely come out.
If an incorrect stud in installed, say the next size up, it may push through the tire causing a flat.
Too small studs will get buried in the tread and will be ineffective.
Most studs are round,
Hakkapeliita invented a square stud which has been proven to significatly inprove traction forward and backward but also side to side to help lateral traction. The hard metal stud pin and bottom flange, as well as the body of the stud, are all square shaped. The new structure gives excellent ice grip and improves the durability of the stud.
