Not a true "scientific" study (lol!), but the only substantive difference in fuel that I found was that my ethanol blend gas mileage is slightly worse than my non-blended gas mileage (btw, non-blended gas is getting tough to find in Louisiana and Texas). I saw a slight improvement in the plus grade of gas vs regular gas, but not enough to warrant the price difference. I have not tried premium gas vs regular or plus grades.

Yes ethanol has less energy per unit of measure than pure gas. Same with bio-diesel, something they don't adsvertise.

Ethanol replaces methyl tert-butyl ether as an oxgenator to raise the octane rating of gasoline. MTBE (C5H12O) is manufactured via the chemical reaction of methanol (CH3OH) and isobutylene (C4H8) and has more energy stored than ethanol.

Yeah, someone told me that supposedly ethanol burns cleaner with less emissions than MTBE, albeit with slight loss in mpg.

Both release carbon dioxide and water when burned. When gasoline leaks from the tanks, the MTBE is water soluble and gets into the ground water. That's the main reason for the move to ethanol.

On my son's grand cherokee the epa mileage estimate shows 20mpg highway on gasoline and 15 mpg on e85. It has the chrysler 4.7 V8 flex fuel engine. Since you get less mileage you must get less power also or so it would seem!

I avg 20-23mpg doing 60 mph. I got as high as 24.9mpg doing 55mph. on a 300 mile trip. My sticker on the truck has 20mpg on hwy. I have a Crewmax Limited with 5.7.

If you drive a reasonable lower speed 55-65 and no mountains or bad headwinds these trucks give real decent mileage, actually better than most full size V6's.

Yeah, but you could either do 55 for 300 miles and make it a 5.5 hour trip, or you could drive 70 and make it a 4.25 hour trip. I'll spend the extra cost and get there early.
