I know what you mean. My behind dash unit on my old Titan did not offer a signal strength option either. It is ironic that the behind the dash integrated units sometimes do not offer some interesting options that the outboard units offer.

Great write up Tox!

BTW, the antenna works better on a metal plate because you are giving it a ground plane

Thanks. Couldn't have done it without your write-up on wiring up the OEM camera. Or at least, it would have taken me a long while to figure it out.

So the metal plate forms a reflector or director for the antenna. I figured it was something like that.

Came across these custom backgrounds on avic411.com and thought some of you might like to add these to your Z2.

Wow...thanks very much for the instructions and pictures.

I am thinking of the aviz-z2 with backup, BT and IPOD adapter for my 08 Tundra DC SR5. From the writeup it looks like you used the trucks existing wiring for the backup cam. I didn't see any pictures of the mounting of the cam at the rear of the truck and the corresponding wire connections. If these pics exist and I missed them I apologize...if someone could post a link that would be great. If they aren't posted yet I'd love to see some pics.

I was thinking of getting this dash kit

2007 2008 Tundra dash radio stereo kit Double Din - eBay (item 110243636049 end time Apr-22-08 07:25:27 PDT)

take a peek at these instructions...doesn't look like they removed the cover over the instrument cluster.

Also how do you guys find the quality of the bluetooth? Is the echo a problem?

thanks again guys for the great info!

Brendin

I didn't include the camera install because I used the Toyota OEM camera. For the OEM camera, all you have to do is remove the old tailgate handle, put in the new one with the camera, and run the supplied wire through the tailgate to the plug behind the bumper. It's all plug and play in the tailgate.

That dash kit appears to be the Scosche kit and is the same one I used. They just throw in a set of tools to go with it. Not bad if you need the tools.

And they do pull out the right side of the dash in those instructions:
How to Install Stereo 2007 2008 Toyota Tundra

You can do it that way. I found it easier to pull more of the dash out than just the right side. I didn't remove the dash cluster, I just pulled it away from the dash to make more room.

The echo all depends on where you put the mic in the truck and how hidden you want it. Play around with the placement and it will be fine.

For those who maybe considering this here's the list of things I installed:
  • AVIC Z2
  • Sirius tuner (SIR-PNR2)
  • Bluetooth module (ND-BT1),
  • iPod (CD-IB100II)
  • Steering remote (CD-SR1)
  • Metra wiring harness (70-1761)
  • Metra 2 Din dash kit (99-8220HG)
The Metra finish is identical to the factory radio trim. I wouldn't hesitate to buy that again.

For those hooking up to the overhead console factory harness: there was more than 1 white wire in the factory connector but the wires that are needed are all on the same side of the connector (white, red, blue gray). They are the ones visible in the foreground on the picture Tox took: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...NavUnit034.jpg

I tapped the factory camera harness so I could return everything to original. It's tight in there with 4 taps but it does fit. Initially my camera didn't work but it was my mistake: a short in the phono connector.

The install took several hours (being a noob at this) but was not hard. I am very happy with the install.

Thank you Toxarch for the great writeup
Can you post some pictures of your unit...I'd like to see how closely the metra dash kit matches the stock dash.

I just noticed that the pioneer Avic-Z3 is out and in good supply on ebay. I'm wondering if its possible to disable the motion lockouts on the Z3 the same way as on the Z1/Z2...will have to research.
