2010 Backup Camera

Okay, so I bought the Toyota OEM back up camera and installed it. This weekend I bought my Alpine 500 head unit from Mesa radio here in Albuquerque. They installed the head unit and wired in the back up camera using the supplied harnesses that came with it. The truck was pre wired for it underneath.
The back up camera does not work however. Mesa radio thinks it is defective, as they have the appropriate 6 volts (5.6 or whatever it is) present at the tailgate. Inside the truck, the head units screen goes dark when I shift into reverse and the word "camera" appears on the upper left corner of the head units screen, but no rear view...just dark.
I took the truck to the dealer this morning, to have them replace the camera under warranty (I'll have to pay the labor costs).
Does anyone have any input about this problem?
What was the part number you bought from Sparks?

If it was a Rostra camera and not the OEM then i may be able to find a Rostra dealer local to you. If it was an OEM part number then it would have to be done just like you are running into. Installed by a Toyota dealership it would have had a parts and labor warranty, installed outside source then parts replacement only and not labor is covered.

That is the OEM part number. That is also the camera that has been discontinued for quite a while now. What did your local dealer say they could do for you? I have not been able to find a OEM camera from anyone in a very long time. The Rostra camera is the one I sell on my site, just like Sparks does.

Yeah, I bought this one in May of 2009, from Sparks. Must've been one of the last ones available. But why is it not working properly? If it's defective, and my dealer replaces it, what will they replace it with?

I just spoke with Toyota Warranty, and apparently the camera's are on an exchange only plan just like all of the factory radio's. So it is not that they are not available, we just can not order them to sell. When we have a warranty camera we send a fax to the manufacture and they send us a replacement. We then take the old one and send it back to them so that they can repair it for the next vehicle that is faulty.

I am impressed with your willingness to look into my problem, when I haven't even bought anything from you yet. The next time I buy something for my Tundra, I will try to buy it from you first.

It is my pleasure! I love a challenge! With as much as I have been investigating the whole back up camera thing for the Tundras I felt obligated to find out for you and everyone else here.

If it is a Rostra camera, it requires 12 volts for operation. I would recommend connecting the camera's power line (red) to your reverse line which will have 12 volts when you put the truck into reverse.

I hope Michael comes back and becomes a permanent fixture here. It's nice to have people willing to help around.
