12 volt

Thanks for the writeup.

Just a little warning for others reading this thread.
If you decide to tap into these wires to power a Radar Detector, GPS, etc. check the power requirements of the unit you are powering. Some devices that normally use a cigarette lighter adapter are 3.7v - 5v not 12v. The adapter reduces the voltage from 12v to whatever the device needs.

Well Tox, we didn't to my 2 mods this weekend... guess I'll have to try to tackle it on my own, lol!

If we hadn't stayed up drinking and playing 42 on Thursday, I bet we could have gotten around to it.

Hey,

So I saw this and being the wus that I am didn't want to cut into power or take down the console. But I have another solution. I used the hardwire connector for my passport 8500 x50 and hooked it up with an add-a-circuit to the fuse box down by the parking brake.. I will try to post some pictures tonight, it took me maybe 15 minutes start to finish and it's 100% removable and only turns on with the truck!

Alright, took some pictures of the install.
Probably not as thorough as Tox's ... his work is top notch. But this is just another option for those out there wanting the same thing.

Here is the radar located up above the mirror ..

I tucked the wire up into the headliner.

Around the A-Pillar and into the little rubber flange by the door.

Down to the bottom. and tucked into the panel by the fuse box.

I used an add-a-circuit to tie it into a switched fuse. I also used the ground by the fuse box.

add-a-circuit

clear picture of the location I used.

blurry picture but shows full location as well.

Looks good up until you ran the wire around the A-pillar in the following picture:

The side curtain airbag runs all the up the A-pillar and across the top of the door under the headliner. Your wire runs across the airbag and I don't know what that will do when the airbag goes off. I would guess it would pull at both ends and turn your radar detector into a flying object near your head. Granted, that is probably a worse case scenario, but you get the idea.

Pop open those two covers on the handle on the A-pillar. There are two bolts underneath that you can remove. Then the whole A-pillar cover comes off and you can run the wires on the windshield side of the pillar and down through the dash.
