1) The reason I ran power to the RD from the fuse box is that my radar detector (Valentine 1) has a separate power module which I have run accessories from (remote display and remote mute button) so I would have to run either 2 wires up or 4 down. I chose the 2 up.

2) I used 14-16 gauge (blue) "T" type wire taps, but any type will do fine as long as they are 14-16 gauge.

3) There are some free slots in the fuse box you can use. Here are 2 that I have used:

I used the wire and fuse supplied with the detector. I don't remember what they are exactly but I am sure you will be fine with 16 gauge wire and a 2 amp fuse. You can also see in the photo the ground on the bolt to the right of the fuses.

are the wires large enough to power the mirror and the detector?
they look pretty small?
just a question, don't mean to cast a doubt.

No problem with asking. The wires are pretty small and I have both the radar detector and the Homelink mirror (added later) powered by those wires. Has not blown a fuse yet. If you look at the wires behind the cigarette lighter and power point, they aren't much larger. Worst thing that happens is you blow a stock fuse and have to rewire the radar detector to a different location.

Neither myself nor anyone else that I know of who has used that power wire for their detectors and their Homelink mirrors have had any problems.

Anyone know if this will work with an 06? The only thing powered in the console are the two dome lights. Would love to mount my nav system up theer and get power.

The 06 had an option for a powered mirror, right? So it might work, just might be a different wire.

I pulled down the console tonight and there is one plug with three wires for the dome lights. There is a red, black and pink wire in the plug. The red seems to get power when the door opens. It would seem that there has to be a wire that is hot all the time because you can turn on the lights when the door is closed. I blew a fuse checking the wires with a multimeter and so when I get a new fuse I will try to figure out which wire is always hot unless someone can provide some assistance.

OK all done...it turns out that the red wire is power, the pink with black stripe is the ground and the black is the door open sensor. I was able to tap into the red and pink. I had to get a power port socket from Radio Shack since the Garmin Nuvi power cord was not a simple two wire set up but has the MSN Traffic sensor in the plug. All works fine and looks good!
