Dunno. Wood sounds pretty dried out and easy to chop. Splitting it from a swing of one foot. Would like to see that on some freshly cut yellow birch.
I think it keeps the pieces from flying all over so you don't have to keep standing them back up again too!

I figure it's mostly to catch the ax head if it glances off the wood. It is a pretty good idea.
I don't know about the axe, but splitting wood in an old tire is a heck of an idea! I've never seen that before!
