Aftermarket remote starter

Ordered remote starter unit for 07 Tundra. Finally found an installer with decent reputation for quality work. Gave up on getting reliable info to attempt installation myself.
Took unit to his shop today and spent about 4 hours while he installed unit. He said remote was very good quality but did not recommend the keyless bypass unit that came with remote. He said the bypass required cutting a security wire to the main ECM and installing bypass inline. He felt that if bypass failed it would leave a person stranded because the Toyota engine immobilizer would not let truck start or run if circuit was broken. I had him use transponder bypass unit and used Tundra Valet key that came with truck. Valet key allows engine to start but will not unlock glove box or tailgate. Remote works beautifully and seems to have good range. Engine does not shut off when door is unlocked. Engine stops if brake is touched or hood is opened if remote is in use.

Purchased Code Alarm brand from AutoAlarmPro.com Seems to be one of the better companies on line. AutoStart is recommended pretty highly also. According to the technician who installed mine it would be wise to stay away from keyless bypass units. If a vehicle does not have engine immobilizer or some type security system I don't think a bypass unit is required. The remote I bought is fairly expensive based on some others I have seen. Even with installation cost and cost of remote it is much more economical than the Toyota factory remote and seems to work much better. Most of the cheaper ones give trouble.

Afraid you might not be able to handle the power of a "fast Slate Metallic" truck. Old men need a warm truck too!!!!

I was thinking of ordering an extra key for a transponder when I have it done. Only, I won't have the key cut for the truck. That way, even if they find the spare key, it won't start the truck because it's not a cut key, it just has the chip in it to start the truck.

Good idea. I only used the Valet key because it was available already. Do all Tundras come with a Valet key? These keys have a gray color. Hate to pay what a dealer wants for the "chipped" key. I wonder if a key with chip from dealer will need to be programmed before it will start truck? Seems I remember seeing someplace that dealer wants about $200.00 to program key after charging about $50.00 for key. Outrageous. Wish the keyless bypass units were more reliable. Do all the Tundras have engine immobilizer security system? Full of questions today aren't I?

Yeah, it might be expensive to get the extra key programmed. But at least it might mean that they can't easily drive off in the truck if they break in and find the key.

All Tundras should have the engine immobilizer and all should come with the grey valet key.

Could possibly use valet key and cut part of key off. That would prevent using it to start vehicle. Don't really see a use for valet key myself. Don't plan on letting some goofball park my Tundra!!!
