Oil Filter on a 4.7 L 2007

I decided to change the oil on my 2007 4.7 L but when I went to remove the filter I found that it did not turn. I tried the trick of pounding a screw driver into to filter but it still won't budge. I'm concerned that the filter may have some kind of locking mechanism. Since I so foolishly (stupidly!) put a hole in the filter I can't just fill up the crankcase and drive it to work tomorrow. Am I just not applying enough force or is there truly some locking mechanism?

I assume you tried a friction oil filter, or end cap wrench first? If not and you haven't totally distorted the filter try one of those first. If that doesn't work, then try a large pair of channel locks and see if that works.

Thanks! I actually did try those things but it still wouldn't budge. In the end, I had to drive a chisel through the filter and then pound on the ends of the chilsel for a full turn before the filter turned easily in my hand. Obviously, the mechanic at the Toyota dealership overtightened the filter or perhaps neglected to put a thin film of oil on the gasket before installing it. My new filter spun on easily and I made sure not to overtighten it. Before re-installing the skid plate I checked to make sure there were no leaks with the engine running. Everything looks ok and next time I probably won't have to remove the skid plate.

I hate when somone else changes my oil... it is very easy to overtighten the filter. I'm pleased to hear you got it off okay!

Thanks for the heads up on the filter. Mine is due in about 200 miles and I always change it myself. I guess I'll allow a little extra time just in case.
