| need some help with a oil change. well my dealership does all my oil changes for free since i bought the truck through them but this last change they for got to put in the oil i brought. So i changed it out sorta.... i followed the dyi guide http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/tun...-change-w.html "Use your 3/8” extension to loosen the oil filter drain bolt. Don’t worry; very little oil will come out when you remove the bolt. Above is what it’ll look like with the bolt removed. You will have to use that plastic “tool” that comes with the Toyota Oil Filter Kit to help drain the oil out of the filter area" ok i dint do this since as i was trying to brake loose the oil filter drain bolt the whole thing started coming off not just the bolt i just kept going and the filter cap and bolt fell down in the oil pan. I look at it realize the nut should have came off first so try to break it free (i could not). i see the big rubber o-ring for the plastic part that usees the 65mm oil wreanch it looks fine so leave it there i take off the filter and slip on a new one. When reinstalling i manage to break free the oil filter drain nut so i take it off and look at where the plastic drain "tool" goes and how it fits. I reinstall every thing fill up with oil start her up look for leaks none, I clean up tool etc.. and then i see that bastard, the old smaller rubber o-ring setting in the oil pan. I never saw where it fell of off i just thought it was inside some how since i didnt take off the filter housing in the correct order. After reading more into the dyi post i cant figure if the small one goes inside with the paper filter or if im really really lucky its just a o-ring for the oil filter drain bolt and can put it in with out losing a bunch of oil. SO where does the smaller o-ring gasket go? the bellow quote from the DIY makes me think its inside on that post most likely? "Once you have the truck portion cleaned up, remove the old oil filter that remains on the lower assembly and replace it with the new one. They should just pull off and push on. If you plan to change the gasket, do it now" |

| Glad you got the problem solved McColl. I have not done an oil change (yet) on the 5.7L but, the oil filter sounds like a PITA! re.ac.tor

| Yeah McColl, I also learned that when the flow of oil running out of the pan starts slowing down that you need to move the bucket as far to the driver's side of the truck as possible because at some point the oil will start running along the bottom of the pan towards the driver's side and if the bucket is centered, you'll have a nice mess to clean up. Don't ask me how I know that, lol! |

| I have changed my oil 8 times so far, and I still dread it. If I didn't have to drop the skid plate, it would lower the PIA factor, especially now that the skid plate is a little tweaked and is more difficult to get on. Having to replace to o-rings(I only do one now as I don't bother draining the filter housing anymore), having to using multiple size wrenches, including a torque wrench, just adds to the frustration. Changing the oil and trying to get a grease gun on the front driveline zert, are my only real problems with the truck.
