    Cam Tower Leak....permanent fix?

I've got a 2012 Crewmax with a 5.7 and 30K on the clock. I was about to buy it off the lease (6 months left) and the cam tower started leaking. The dealer has to order some parts and he says it's a 2-3 day repair. Once I got home, I did a little research and found that this type of leak is not that uncommon. It's covered under warranty, so no sweat there. I've read that some owners have complained to Toyota....one received a Platinum Warranty, one was told "no extended warranty for you" and one had the remaining cost of his extended warranty reimbursed by Toyota. My major concern lies after the 60K power train warranty is up. I'm going to write Toyota and ask for an extended warranty at no charge. If they refuse, my options are to turn the truck in at the end of the lease or live with the repair and hope it does not re-occur. Does anyone have experience with the longevity of the repair that the dealer does?

No problem with mine b206, and to be honest, I don't recall too many here talking about having the cam tower leak problem.

I did the Google search and it seems there are enough folks who have had the problem to make it a topic on some other forums. It also seems to happen across several model years (2010-13) and both the 4.6 and 5.7 engines. My main concern is the longevity of the repair.....is it a permanent fix or is there a possibility of it happening again down the road. BTW, are you still with the yellow & black?

Yes I am...will likely stay here until I retire. I wonder if the cam tower leak issue is maybe more common in some parts of the US than other parts, such as where the weather is very cold and dry?

What's involved in the repair? Is it more than just a gasket?
Any questions about truck mods I have done need to be asked in the forums. Don't send me a private message about mods cause I probably won't answer that PM unless there is money involved.

It's a big repair....they told me 2-3 days. Others have reported it's 14 hours of labor. Evidently most of the top and front of the engine comes apart to replace the cam supports. From what I've read, when pallets of aluminum parts are shipped the parts on the bottom warp under the weight of the ones on top. Not sure if that's the problem with the Tundra parts, but it's been thrown around.

Got the Tundra back late last week....took the dealer 4 days (actually 6 if you count the weekend) to get it back to me. I emailed Toyota Corporate and asked for an extended warranty before I buy it off the lease. They confirmed they received my email, but no decision yet. Some say it can take up to a month for them to render a decision. I'll keep my fingers crossed.....don't really want another truck payment.

It looks like Toyota came through......They are providing a 7-year, 100,000 mile, zero deductible Platinum Warranty gratis. It's nice to know that good customer service still exists. On a side note, the truck developed and oil leak again, which turned out to be a pinched valve cover gasket. Fixed in one day by the dealer, with a free courtesy car.....sweet!
