You can either upload your pics to a free host site like Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and link to them by using "Insert Image" icon (shown below), or you can use the "Manage Attachments" options in the Additional Options of making a post and link directly to your picture on your computer. You should note that should you move or delete the picture on your computer or on photobucket, that the picture will disappear from your post and a red "X' will show instead.

Thanks. I'll try again. My problem is that I'm going to get the truck Line-X'ed and I don't want to have to redo the tailgate after loading/unloading the quads a few times.

I am also hearing that the new, welded tailgates have also got extra internal bracing on top of all the extra welds.

I'd be interested in hearing more about how the tailgates are weak.
All I have seen is the problem with the corner as I am still not convinced the one that folded under a golf cart is not just a fluke or abuse.

So if the weld has fixed the corner from separating and the braces are allowing for more weight, what else is weak about it?

I have loaded and unloaded my motorcycles dozens of times, including my 520lb XS850SG, my 220lb YZ450F, and 215lb YZ250F.
I have loaded and unloaded close to 2000lbs of fencing material.
I have loaded and unloaded 1800lbs of concrete, 30 - 60lb bags.
I have moved and unloaded a 1500lb pallet of Bamboo flooring.
I have loaded and unloaded a 250lb Refrigerator, leaving it on the edge of the tailgate for a few hours till a neighbor got home to help me lift it down.
The tailgate has been a work bench for many projects.
I have even been to the grocery store a few times.

After all that with my 220lb a$$ on it and more, I still have no damage to my tailgate.
I think I use and abuse mine as a truck more than most.

That said, I bet I could go out right now, get up on the tailgate, stomp on the corner and get it to start separating.
When mine becomes damaged, Toyota will replace it with the new version.

Mine will become damaged before the warranty is up, I am sure of it.

I took a good look at the tailgates on my buddies 2007 Dodge 1/2 ton, my dad's 2007 Ford F350, and another friend's 2005 F350 and compared them to my tailgate, and the new Tundra tailgate.
I can see that the new style tailgate is every bit as strong as theirs.

So please, don't take me as being rude, just enlighten me.
What are your's or anyone's fear at this point?
The seam separates, Toyota fixed it, what else is there?
When I stated the weld as a bandaid I was referring to the previous posts that said it appeared a weld had been done only on the top lip of the tailgate. My quote that you used was referring to a weld / repair done by another member and I felt that by his description it would have been sufficient to reinforce the original weak tailgate. Search this site and you will find several tailgate failures. The tailgate that was so severly damaged was inspected by Toyota and deemed defective, used to redesign a stronger tailgate and hopefully Toyota will eventually replace all the weak tailgates still out there. Not meaning to be rude but I feel that some research and prior info would help when making statements about a post.

I know this, but there were no pictures of the work that I could see.

I did, and read them all.

My opinion is that Toyota appeased this person. Less than $1000 for damage control to quiet them, I'd pay that even if I knew the customer was in the wrong. Then, if Toyota truly did use the severely damaged tailgate as the model for the fix, it makes me more comfortable that this fix is a permanent one.

I am not taking you as rude at all...
I did research this site and I follow TS and have read it all about the tailgates.
It's a real issue for me as I use my tailgate on almost a daily basis.
Looking at the new design, I am comfortable that Toyota has fixed it.

You may call it a band-aid, but I call it fixed...It's now as strong as any other tailgate out there.

Hey all

First let me say Sorry for not getting the pix up. I have been busy with Work, Racing and life in general. I will do the promised write up as time permits. Please continue to be patient my time is very limited and life hasthrown a few curves at me of late.

To answer a previous post Toyota has never asked me to not talk about the gate. My lack of picture posting is on me nobody else. I did get my gate paid for by Toyota and I am happy about that but I also now know it was above and beyond what they were obligated to do.

On friday 4 Toyota engineers visited my shop to Weigh the Cart load it on an instumented Tundra. The cart wieghs waaaaay more than I thought. Oooops. They calibrated some equipment and left their Tundra in the back yard and we went to get a bite to eat.

We talked and had a nice dinner at a local resturant. Really nice guys no blame, lots of info and I got a nice fix of engineering talk. (my wife calls it geek talk)

On Saturday morning we met at my house and headed to the scene of the original crime. Since I was going out there I figured I would take the Rock Crawler and get some practice in and give a demo to the Toyota guys. So I had the Crawler in tow. It was a cool site my Tundra with buggy in tow followe by 3 Tundras one with the Cart of Death in the back and a Lexus SUV Truckin up I 15. "Mercy sakes alive looks like we got us a Convoy"

I'll try too keep this short but you will be happy to know. One of the tailgates had a production looking reinforcement installed to fix the "upper corner deformation". ( the problem most of you are seeing) This gate was the first one tested. My daughter was riding with the Toyota engineer when they hit the first Whoop. She said they were going a little fast. The cart bounced a few inches in the air as did the tail gate. Since we were planning on swaping a lot of gates they did not have the saftey catches on the cable stays. One of them came off in the bounce and needless to say the gate suffered a major failure when the cart came back down. The good news to this story is the upper corners did not even budge. No deformation at all. Their fix appeared to have solved that issue.

We spent the rest of the day swithching the cart between trucks and gates and off loading. They gathered lots of Data and the process was really interesting to watch.

I procceded to break our crawler in the worst possible situation Which took 4 or 5 hours to get unstuck. So there was not much practicing or demonstration but we had fun and the weather could not have been better. I'll take any day in the desert to working or honey doos.

Rest assured all, Toyota is serious about this truck and they do monitor what goes on here. Post up your coments they will see it.

Thanks
still photoless
Wayne

Thanks for the update. The separation along the top is my main concern and it sounds like they may have that solved...now I just have to hope they either recall them to fix it, or have them install an "upgraded" gate when mine fails.

Tailgate Fix

Hi!,
Just test drove a 08 DC 4.7 yesterday, I looked at the tailgate, not one of the welded types, wonder what the production date of the new Tundra's with the revised tailgates are. I am tending toward on buying a Tundra but the tailgate and bed bounce have me worried. really like the truck when I was driving it, drove more like a car than a truck.

Same Issue with my 2008 mfg'd in 4-08

This thread seems a duplicate of sticky in Shadtree.

Anyway...

I purchased my truck last week. I found this forum so I checked my tailgate. Sure enough, no extra weld on the tail gate. It hasn't failed yet but I haven't loaded anything that would strain this joint. As msxjw noted, some flex can be seen if you put just your own weight on the corner of the tailgate.

I also noticed on zukIzzy's post that his failure occurred near the middle of the gate which would indicate that the entire length of this weld is weak.

What's the suggestion for taking action? I don't want this thing to break a few years down the road and then be out of warranty coverage. I also plan on installing a Line-X bed liner next week and don't want to pay for lining the tailgate twice. I think I'm going to call the dealership and ask if they've had customer complaints about this and see if I can take some preventative action.

The truck is a 2008 CrewMax 4X4. I believe it was manufactured in TX 04-08 accodring to the VIN plate inside the driver door.

Toyota most likely won't change the tailgate before a failure occurs. It's odd that your tailgate does not have the weld fix. I thought all the new trucks had it from the factory. I would hope they would cover the cost of redoing the Line-X on the tailgate, but I have not seen anyone who has had a replacement and had Line-X. I have Line-X on my truck and load an ATV in the back as well as other stuff. I have a crack in the paint in the corners, but no major damage. I've had the truck since June 07.
