I'd sure like to see a pic of the damage if you have one.

Is that the location of one of the ramp supports? It does seem like an odd place for the tailgate to fail.

The tailgate failed on both sides with this side being the worst. The ramp supports are right on the edge of where the tire tracks are on the tailgate. If you take off the tailgate protector you can see that the tailgate is just a skin. This is not knocking the tailgates quality I just feel that a weld gave way to what reason I don't know. It looks to just be one of those fluke things.

Mine failed simlarly only from too much load in the center not the edge. The stringer in the gate is not welded to the skin it is bonded with a seam seal material. When it fails it allows the stringer to defrom the outer skin enough to tear from the sub structure.

Has anyone drove down to the dealership and let them see what's happened? If you don't take it in it doesn't get reported thus it doesn't get fixed. Also I suggest that even if they don't do anything about it now you keep your receipts and old tailgate so if or when a recall/TSB is issued down the road you can get reimbursed.

I am meeting with the Toyota rep next week. They were very kind and wanted to see the tailgate along with the ATV ramp.

Good for you. That's the only way to get things fixed. Did you get a hold of the Customer Experience center or you dealership to set this up?

For those of you who have had a tailgate issue you may want to contact the Customer Experience Center by following this link. http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/tun...ce-center.html

I posted pictures of the tailgate but they were not allowed for some reason. As far as page 35 of the owners manual it tells you to see page 464 section 2 for precautions when loading luggage. I don't believe that an ATV or Golf cart is considered luggage. However page 463-465 never mentions how much weight a tailgate can hold. It only tells you how to compute the max. weight allowed in the truck bed after subtracting out the weight of the passengers. I am not slamming the Tundra just stating the facts. Toyota makes a great product I just feel that at least two of us have a tailgate that was not assembled the proper way. All brands have problems!!
I for one am in no position to judge you or your situation.
However, as hard as I might try I cannot just let the comment about my being a principal and the general comment about educators go unanswered.
For one, I am proud to be an educator and am offended at your comment "Typical educator does not believe anything."
I would not say something such as this when trying to "make friends" and learn about a community such as this as it IMHO doesn't make a good first impression.
However, I am sorry about your misfortune with your tailgate and I am confident that Toyota will stand behind their product and make it right with you.

As far as you - we'll call my remarks "out of line" and that they wash with your's about educators. So... can we call it EVEN?

Now - with that said, Welcome to the site. Despite a rough beginning, you will find this to be a useful site full of information and fun. I will look forward to reading about the epilogue with your tailgate issue - so be sure to keep us posted
