You know, I took a quick peek over at the "other" site (sorry Squid, couldn't resist) and there is a similar thread over there about the tail gate failures. Collectively, we need to make sure Toyota recognizes this IS a problem. I'm going to call Toyota tomorrow, report this issue, open a case number and see what I can find out.

So the paint line cracking is an early warning for the crimped tailgate seperating.

I'm not wild about the wording in the petition, but I went ahead and signed it.

I've never known one of those online petitions to work. The thing that does seem to work the best is news reporters. You get the media on this and get them in a feeding frenzy over the poorly constructed tailgate, and that will get Toyota's attention and get them to do something about it quick.

Agree on the wording Tox, but I also signed it. If the petition doesn't work, then, as distasteful as it is, we may have no alternative except the media.

I have a case # and email in to Toyota, they still are hanging on the Golf cart as the culprit. But I was able to stop the painter from painting my new gate and I will weld in some reinforcments and clean off the sealer and weld up the sides too. that should make the new one last a bit longer. I still recomend you all haveing a peice of ply cut to spread the load on the gate.

Hopefully it doesn't come to the whole media thing, That would be like putting Troll treats outside the front door of the site!

My converstion with the Service Manager at my local Toyota house went something like that today. A body shop sublet to "fix" my tailgate. My definition of fix is a lot like what you described above. And then of course to paint it afterwards.
