| Find a friendly Toyota or Lexus tech who wants a few bucks for a 5 minute job on the side. My buddy at Lexus asked his boss if he could use the "Techstream" scanner after shop hours for a few minutes. The boss said sure and my buddy got beers and dinner.

Iam a toyota tech that owns a tundra and i can tell you that you are only partly correct. Most of the wiring that is in all the tundras provides the wiring for the factory alarm as well. But you cannot just activate anything, you first must install additional parts(and even more parts and wires are needed if youur truck did not come with wireless built in. Then you must activaye it with a techstream scantool. So again dont make everyone think that their trucks all came with alarms built in from the factory when in fact they do not, and there is more involved than just plugging in and activating. Nothing personaaal just stating the facts, it bothers me when dealerships and in particular technicians are made out to be ripping peaople off when we are not because of misinformation or lack of facts. |

| Suppose the truck does come with the wireless (and beeps for the lock/unlock), what other parts are needed?

| Not taken personally at all. Great looking truck! Like kinda familiar for some reason. I don't think I ever stated that any technician or dealership was ripping anyone off and I hope you did not take it that way. I have lots of technician friends and even a couple of sales guys. My point was that with the help of a friendly service staff you might get a nice "freebie" or low cost alarm. I would never gripe if a dealer refused to do this without charging for the alarm or charged labor to activate it. I would gain respect for on that did it as a courtesy and be likely more loyal as a result. I never stated that every truck had the alarm built in. What I stated was that my truck had the keyless entry and the engine immobilizer and we were able to use a techstream to activate the alarm. We did this without plugging in the GBS ecu box to test the theory. I had no alarm before using the techstream and did after using it. We them plugged the harness into the GBS ecu box and the GBS now worked as well. This would seem to make sense since the keyless entry makes the lights flash and the horn sound if the panic mode is pushed and that is the exact same thing the alarm does. Unless my Lexus buddy installed something while I was not looking that is all we did. He did not think it was going to work until he tried it. Does your truck have the alarm? If not would you be willing to hook up the techstream and try it? That is assuming you have keyless entry (since I can see the 5.7 badges I know you have the engine immobilizer). |

| I did a further test this morning. I unplugged the ecu that comes with the GBS. Again other than the GBS we did not add any wiring or parts to my truck. I then set the alarm. I waited 30+ seconds and the made noise by clapping right in front of the GBS sensor. Nothing happened (when the ecu is plugged in I can set of the alarm by doing this). The GBS was not working because it was unplugged at the little ecu box that comes with the sensor. I then opened the door from the inside and the alarm sounded. I believe this proves that IF you have keyless entry and the engine immobilizer the alarm works by having it activated with the techstream even if the GBS is not added or connected. Good luck to those who try it. |

Did not take anything personally, just know for a fact that when i wanted alarm operation on my truck i had to install the gbs ecu first to be able to get the alarm to activate. Parts told me this is what was required for v5 factory alarm to work. If you can get it to work without this then that is news to me and i apoligize. I will try it on a the next new tundra prep that i get through the shop. |

| PT, if one does not come in soon, maybe you can take my experiment to the next step. Since you have access to a scanner you could shut off the alarm on your truck with the Techstream. Then unplug the GBS box. By then reactivating the alarm you can then confirm if it works without the GBS. I was able to unplug the GBS box without removing any panels by laying on my back under the steering column. I did not unplug the speaker when I did my test yesterday, but I can't imagine that alone would make a difference. I know this is asking a lot and no worries if you don't want to do it...we are all busy. I know several on this board would like a confirmation from a good Toyota source. Thanks and Merry Christmas. |

| Interesting that I have the Toyota Alarm System (there are stickers on the front seat side glasses), but no GBS (at least I don't see anything mounted where they say the GBS mounts). If this is the case then Tony is right... apparently you can have the alarm system without the GBS so long as you have the keyless remote and engine immobilizer and thus you should be able to activate the alarm? Then again, maybe I am totally confused!
