Naut - good resurrection. (not you LOL the thread) but, the fuel things still puzzles me and I have owned mine since July. I guess the good thing is that if you learn to live with it - it costs less to fill it up.

Kent, if I drive mine right (read that at 65-70 mph), I can go 350 miles without the low fuel light coming on, and it takes roughly 19.5 gallons to fill it up), which if my math serves me correctly, means I could go 400 miles before fill-up and still have almost 4 gallons left. I never came close to that in my Titan (which had a larger fuel tank by about 2 gallons).. although I drove my Titan 75+ mph (don't write me up Tony), which may be the difference!

I think the closer I get to an empty tank, the closer to an actual empty tank I get. My computer used to show zero miles till empty and I could fill up 19 gallons. I stretched that a few times and now mine says zero and I fill up about 22.5 gallons, maybe a little more. Maybe it adjusts according to how much you go past the zero mark in the computer. I dunno.

The extra fuel in the tank is supposed to help cool the fuel pump. Kinda odd to me but I guess that's a common thing. Hope my fuel pump never goes out.

My theory is that it's also there to help you not get stranded without gas. Sure, when you are cruising around in an empty truck, you might be getting 18 mpg so 5 gallons left over when the gauge says empty is a lot of extra gas. A car will usually have around 1.5-2 gallons left to get you around 35 miles in case you are between towns. But how about when you are towing say 10K pounds? You are probably getting like 8mpg towing that much weight. Now when the gauge reads empty, your 5 gallons will get you an extra 30-40 miles to another gas station. So having 5 gallons left in the tank isn't a bad thing at that point.

New forum member here, this is my first post. I own a '07 Tundra Limited 4x4, double cab. I found this forum because I started looking on the internet for information on my truck. The question I had was basically, is my tank really 26.4 gallons in size. I was questioning the accuracy of my owners manual because despite driving this thing down to "E" and at least 30 miles beyond my range at zero, I am never able to put more than 22 gals of gas in the truck. Without carrying spare gas in the bed, which I have not done yet, I was not going to push it further than that -- as I didn't want to run out of gas and get stranded.

So, glad I found this thread. It sounds like my experiences are completely consistent with the rest of you folks. It also sounds like my tank is truly 26.4 gals, but that last 4 gals of gas is hard to get at unless you like driving around on E with the range at zero for at least 60 miles.

I think all of us here have similar experiences on the fuel gauge. Apparently part of the large reserve is to ensure the fuel pump stays immersed and lubricated. Questionable whether you need 4 to 6 gallons reserve to do that, but what you're seeing is consistent with most others. My previous truck was a Titan and I saw the same thing with it (6 +/- gallons left when the low fuel light came on).

FYI.. the scanguage is alot more accurate in this regard. If you have the scanguage, and regularly track your fuel and use the "fillup" feature, you can drink the tank down to your last gallon with no worries

I had all the same questions as everyone else after doing about 250mi today back and forth from home to Loma Linda for my fiancée's dentist visit. Couldn't figure out when I filled up this morning why it only took about 7 gal when the gas gauge was where it was, and couldn't understand the thing telling me I only had 100mi left when we got home with the size of the tank I had read in the user manual.

Talking at Wendy's we postulated that maybe it's the reserve thing. The light on my Ninja comes on with a gallon in the tank, enough for about 40-50 miles, and my buddy's Electra Glide comes on at half a tank, so I guess we have the same phenomenon here. Glad to know I'm not crazy and the manual's not a typo.

I kinda felt like an idiot the other day. Drove out to Tyler the past weekend for a friend's wedding. On the way back from Tyler on Sunday, I looked at the gas gauge and it showed a little over half a tank. Saw a station with gas for $2.95 so I figured I better go ahead and fill up. Stopped at the pump and as I was climbing out, I remembered our reserve tank space. I went ahead and filled up since i had already stopped and put in 10 gallons. I felt kinda like an idiot for filling up with 15+ gallons left in the tank but at least it was a decent price for gas. Everywhere else had it for $2.99. Tyler is only about 320 miles round trip, though I had to pick up a friend in Dallas and spent a long time in traffic there.
