Bumper Design: Bumper Measurements Needed

I was wondering if we have anyone who is really good with CAD and would be willing to do some free CAD drawings for all of us. After looking at some of the steel bumpers for the Tundra, and not being impressed with the offerings and especially the price, I was thinking that it would be neat to come up with our own bumper. If someone had the know how to measure the mounts and everything on the truck and come up with a CAD drawing for a bumper, then we could make our own bumpers and ditch the OEM chrome ones that seem to be rusting on a lot of trucks. Maybe design it to support a winch and tow shackles in the front. If people don't want those on the bumper, then they just leave the winch part covered.

The CAD drawings would help to break down the individual pieces that need to be cut and pieced together to be welded. Sure would save a lot of time with a cutter or grinder trying to get it right. And for those who don't want to make it themselves, they could just hand the plans to a local metal shop and pay a small free to have the local shop build it for them.

How about setting up a donation box for the CAD drawer to thank them for their time? I'm just throwing out some ideas and thought it would be neat to just build our own. Or get a couple of guys in an area together for a couple of weekends to have bumper building meets where they all help each other build bumpers. One guy measures, one guy cuts, one guy bends the pieces, two guys weld, you get the idea. After a few weekends of helping each other, they all would have the bumpers. Like I said, just a thought.

AutoCAD

I'm pretty good with AutoCAD. Too bad I don't live near this buddy of mine, he is a mech and works a lot in solid works (designs logging equipment and howitzer carriers !?!).

I can draw some stuff up with AutoCAD tho, I have 2006 right now.

Dido on the cad work..I think this would be a great idea, and not just for bumpers. I'd like a running board/nerf bar extension for along the bed.

So first order of business would be to document existing mounts/mounting options.
Have to take bumper off to get info to start with...take some pictures for reference and measurements
Next - design off of locations...tubes (square or round), expanded metal, bent metal, Mount Configuration etc, etc... then prototype (check measurements).

Other considerations - Fog Lights, Sonar, Air Bag Sensors etc.
I know there is a website where companies that make aftermarket parts for the vehicle can get info, but havent explored it much. Maybe a call to corporate?

As far as design goes are there any good places to start, like general design for bumpers and stuff like that? Maybe if anyone has an ARB bumper we could reverse engineer.

Very good idea

I am a cad operator in the steel industry, my customers are Steel fabricators, Structural & misc. I've been drawing blueprints for fabrication fo 20+ years.

The dwgs shouldn't be too tough, they could then be converted to pdf's for anyone to use.

The reverse engineering is all that is needed. Someone w/ one of these type bumpers, & the know how, to ACCURATELY take some dimensions from it.

I'd be willing to draw the plans, probably even get one of my customers to build a prototype.

Is there anyone out there with one of the following type bumpers to use as a "template"

Kennesaw Mountain Accessories

Alright, we have two CAD volunteers and one is a professional CAD operator with experience in steel fabrication designs. But we still need some measurements off an after market bumper. Anyone have an after market bumper and willing to take some measurements?

I wonder if it would be just as easy to pull the stock bumper off the truck and do all the measurements from scratch? Then you'd know what parts on the truck you have to clear when making the drawing and how to get the best approach and tire clearance.

If we can find someone who is going to put one on anyways, we could get some "bumper-less" pics of the front to work with...I'd take mine off for pics if I had a second vehicle in case I hose something up.

Here's a start. Look half way down the Kennesaw pricing page for the Toyota bumper:

http://www.kenmtnac.com/Tundra07.html

There's a picture of their main bracket. Looks like they use the tow hook mounts and the another hole farther back. Winch box could mount between these and then bumper to the end of it.

I was looking at some front mounted hitches, and I believe they use the same horizontal holes in the frame.
Anyone have plans for one of those?
I looked at that pic again, you can see the factory fog light harness hanging all tied up.
The discoloration at the bottom shows there are at least 2 welds, most likely for crossmembers.
Nice find Tox.

Nice find indeed!

I have been looking for a low-profile winch mount pretty much since I got the truck. I really like the look of this but no luck in obtaining one since a SEMA concept vehicle.

I met Chris Marsolais from Lucrum last weekend at SedonaFest, he's a fabricator - very high quality work IMO. He's willing to work on something similar for my Tundra but the upfront work could be cost-overwhelming. I'll definitely be watching this thread and if I can contribute will do so ...

Look at the light setup on Lucrum's rig too, coool!
