07 Tundra Sound System Thoughts

Now that some of you have some miles on your 07 Tundra how do you think the sound system performs? (I know there are some lurkers wondering about this.)

Personally I've never heard an OEM sound system that I was pleased with, including the mid line system I have in my present truck, but the Tundra may be different?

For my needs, the jbl in the new tundra sounds very good. Think it depends on what you are looking for out of the system. Some may need to go with an aftermarket system, but for most i think the jbl will suffice.

Drove an ls460 up to northern california last weekend and I do have to say the mark levinson blows the jbl away and I would have to think it would be hard to find a nicer sounding stereo in a car, even an aftermarket one.

Was very hard to get back into the tundra after the weekend.

I find that the JBL system is much cleaner sounding than the RF system in my last Titan.
I haven't checked to see if the JBL system actually has JBL components, or if it is like the RF system in the Titan which has no RF components and is really Clarion and Panasonic.

The JBL systme sounds great. I can not believe the amount of sound (especially the lows) it puts out for a stock system. It sounds very clear and even compared to my wifes Acura TL, which is supposed to be awesome, it sounds great. I have the upgraded 440 watt JBL, it comes with or without the Nav but I could not find a SR5 without the Nav that had the JBL system so I ended up getting the Nav. I made a great decision!!!

I am not picky, for the past ten or twelve years I have not bothered trying to listen to the radio in my 1989 Ford F350 (too much wind and road noise). Now with the Tundra I can hear the radio again. Sounds good to me but I am hearing impaired. I got a stereo jack to plug my ipod into the Aux port in the dash. It works great and sounds really good to me. I got the 1-Ft Shielded Stereo Audio Cable from Radio Shack part #42-2497 for $5.99. It is 1/8" stereo miniplug to 1/8" stereo miniplug m/m. The ipod shuffle fits in the ashtray which I don't use anyway and the plug is plenty long enough. When I am done I pull the plug from the dash and put cable in the ashtray with the ipod and close it. Nobody knows it's there! Well, until now that is.

The JBL system may be the Bench Mark for the Truck segment, But..

I am happy enough with the 12-speaker 465 watt JBL (with blue tooth) that I will leave it alone.

However the 760 watt Harmond Cardon / Logic 7 (I have enjoyed it in a 2006 LR3 HSE) is noticably better sounding. However the Logic 7 is still only second best to the Lexus -Mark Levinson System according to the July issue # 22 of Winding Road

I can vouch for the mark levinson, very, very nice sound. Even though Mark is no longer associated with the company and is married to one of the girls from sex in the city, he can still be proud.

Jim, I just picked up the exact same cable from my RS the other day and do the same with my iPod. All I have on my iPod so far is my CD collection from home and the sound quality depends on the age of the CD. The newer CDs sound fantastic and have a full, rich, robust sound while some of the older ones sound tinny.

As far as the sound of the Tundra's sound system - I have the mid level stereo (the one with the 6 disc changer). I wish that the volume knob was not so hard to turn - maybe it will loosen up with time. I think the sound quality and volume is decent for a stock system - on par with my last mid-level 6 disc changer in the Titan. I do like the way Nissan allows you complete flexibility over the programming of your station buttons, though. To wit, on the Titan you can program any of the 18 presets to any AM, FM or satellite station you wish - you could have 18 AM stations if you could find that many! On the Tundra you are limited to 6 FM1, 6 FM2, 6 AM and 6 satellite stations. Why restrict the flexibility?? On the other hand - it is kind of neat how you can set the Bass and Treble separately amongst the FM1, FM2 and AM stations.

My 2 cents - re.ac.tor

Exclamation On a side note...

I called Sirius Friday May 25 to cancel the service to the old Titan. They offered me a FREE Sirius InV radio/car kit - all I had to pay was S&H (~ 8.5 bucks). They also offered to "suspend" my acct. until I get the new unit ready to roll so I would not be wasting money.
Admittedly it is the least expensive unit they offer but hey - what do you want for nuthin'??? I received it yesterday and am going to look into installing it very soon. It should work out nicely - the radio has an AUX output which can connect to the AUX line-in we are using for iPods and this method of connection is superior to using the FM transmitter. I am thinking about mounting the little radio on the left hand side of the console just ahead of the tranny shifter. I wll post some pics when I get finished to let you guys know how it looks and sounds.

Here is a link to the radio web page: SIRIUS InV Plug and Play Satellite Radio and Vehicle Kit - MSRP: $39.99 - Shop Sirius

Here is a pic of the radio itself:

At $ 6.95 / month it is a good deal

i have the same unit

the output is very low, you will need the volume knob turned to maximum most of the time, sound quality is not on par with the Creative Zen Micro which has a 98 db signal to noise rating
