RC storage

I love the storage area in behind the seats on the RC but I hate the fact that when you hit the brakes hard, anything in the back comes flying under the seats and hits you in the feet. Plus I hate crap laying around loosely. So after a lot of thinking of how I can come up with some storage and still put a sub box in and seeing Verrot's RCSB stealthish sub box post I decided on this.

First was to build a base.

Then I built a down firing sub box. Big rip off of Verrot's. Thanks.

Next I started the side boxes.

I forgot to take pics of the rest of the build. Making the curves and lids. It was easy except for the curve on the drivers side. I ended up making a template of the curve and cut 8 matching pieces and glued and nailed them together. Then I glassed it then bondoed it to smooth it out. I was going to paint it gloss black but then decided it would blend in with the rest of the interior by texturing it and then painting it with bumper paint. I found the bumper paint was pretty close to the existing black interior.

Here are some pics of the base carpeted, and sides pretty much done. I still need to finish the sub box. Hopefully by next weekend.

And the piano hinge I used for the lids. I really should have painted them but I figured you will never see them anyways.

I finally put it into my truck today. Here are the pics.

I will post more pics when I get the sub box in.

Now that being said, here are the screw ups that I wish I would have done differently.

The drivers side box front corner touches the center seat back corner. I should have made it a half an inch smaller.

The texture is too much. I should have went with a little less texture.

Oh well, you live and learn. I have never built anything like this before so it was a very cool learning experience.

Let me know if you have any questions or want any better pics.

Steve

Nice job on those storage compartments. I think your sub is going to be more like a bandpass sub box rather than a down-firing sub. You have a lot of sub surface area and a tiny opening on the one side. I think your bass will suffer. You should also brace that space between the subs. It needs more support right there.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I took my time building this. It has been about 6 weeks so far. Between trying to figure out how to do certain things, having to redo others, and of course the neighbours coming over and drinking my beer (mostly because of the neighbours) it has been a long haul.

After this the next mission is to find a way to mount a set of 6x9's in the back. I have some temporary boxes right now but I don't want them in the way anymore. Any ideas?

Tox, can you explain the difference between bandpass and down-firing? I really don't know much about sub boxes. I looked up a couple of websites and used an online calculator to design it. The tiny opening on the back is where the speaker wire connector is going to go. I hope I didn't screw it up. Any advice would be appreciated.

As for the brace, thanks. I will install one today. I never even thought of that.

A bandpass sub is a two chambered sub. One chamber is sealed and the other is ported or open to tune the sub for a certain frequency. What I see is that your design is a sealed enclosure that when placed face down, creates a second chamber below the box since it's only open on the one side and it turns your sealed single chamber sub into a 2 chambered ported sub. Band pass subs are hard to get right, even with calculating everything. The design might work OK, it was just my opinion that it's going to act more like a bandpass sub.

Be sure to seal all the seams with silicone and put some around the terminal plugs too.

Thanks Tox. I guess if it sounds like crap I could always flip it upside down. I was just worried that the subs would get damaged with me putting stuff in the back. I'll keep you all posted.

Between the silicone inside and resin on the outside, I would imagine the box is pretty well sealed.
