Tundra 2007+ Paint Problems....

Hi All...

I'm an 08 Crewmax owner, and whilst I love the truck... the paint is beyond crap. I've noticed quite a few others have the same problem, and when I bought the truck, I saw the adverts, you know... the truck skidding round, having tons of stuff shoved in the back, grrrrr... its a meaty, tough, truck that'd stand up to the day-to-day action and more.

How wrong I was.

The paint looks as though it was blown on by a 13 year old Thai ladyboy from 6 feet away (well, actually it would probably be better!). It appears as though its one coat over primer, with no clear coat.

Now, I believed Toyota's hype about the truck, and whilst I love every part of it... the paints a huge problem, with several scratches around the truck in the first 2 weeks over careful ownership and the back bed (which you would think would be the most protected probably with what should be similar to the rock guard) has been scratched deeply down to the primer simply by putting in a bed mat.

This is not good enough. Toyota (despite having to confirm to EPA regulations) has SEVERELY skimped on the paint on this truck and got it wrong..

So.. I've setup a petition at http://friendsite.com/users/petition...t+Quality.html

If you're a Tundra owner, and want to complain, then I'd really appreciate it if you could spend 2 seconds signing the petition - you don't have to be a member and no registration is required - I'd also really appreciate it if you could get the word out and get as many people as possible to sign this petition. Once sufficient signatures have been reached then I intend to take this Toyota and the press. Thanks All!

Sorry, but if your paint looks like a 13 yr old painted why did you buy it?

Oh it looks fine when I bought it.. however, I wasn't made aware that its so thin, and only when joining a few forums to see about upgrades etc.. that I knew other people have exactly the same complaint, they thought it was a hard working truck not something you have to wrap in bubble wrap.. if this is what its like now, what's it going to be like in 3 years?

Of course, any car/truck looks great on the lot, but having scratches down to the primer after only having it 2 weeks and all I've done so far is truck my little daughter round, is beyond a good quality product, and certainly beyond something I expected from my first Toyota. So, instead of just whinging about it, I'm doing something about it - and want others to stand by me when I put forward a complaint. The dealer simply says that's how it is - unfortunately that's not good enough for me.

Enviro. regs

I think you've got it right. In today's world of environmental regulation, you have to pay to pollute. Painting is expensive to do it right and I suspect that Toyota using a method that reduces it's cost to paint. Unfortunately, that means that the paint is not as good as we are used to having. I don't think it's going to get any better, unless you want to pay even more on the sticker to get high quality paint from the factory. Only the highest priced cars (German, for example) still have good paint nowadays.

ive owned 5 different toys and the paint on all the 4x4s including my same factory painted 86 extra cab 4x4 that i had for 14 years my 07 tundra has been great. You may have gotten a lemon and you can be sure Toyota is serious about customer satisfaction and i beleive they will do all they can to make you happy.Get on the phone to the upper people over the Tundras in Texas and just tell them about your problem and see if they can get it fixed and good luck.

Welcome to the forum CheekyRick,

Sounds like you may want to get the bed Line-X'd. If you are close to North TX be sure to click on the Line-X link in my signature. 123Gone is a member here and does a damn fine job spraying on the Line-X (and will give you a discount too)!!

I know Toyota uses a multicoat paint process on the Lexus models that uses muliple base and clear coats, I think they need to do this on the Tundras because trucks tend to take more abuse in the paint area.

The paint is crap. I'll probably have 123Gone LineX the whole bloody thing in a couple of years, because the side of my truck looks pretty bad already.
