I despise running, so here's how I exercise my dog:

If you're really determined to do it, you can teach your dog to run on the treadmill. It took a LOT of work to get mine to run on it. I signed him up for the 'Animal Athlete' booth at my school's open house last year, which was going to require him to run on a treadmill for people to watch. So I did all the work with the school's treadmill, which was actually designed for pigs. It was significantly louder and bigger, as well as being caged in, compared to the one I have. It took 6 consecutive nights, an hour each night, until he would run on the school's treadmill. Actually, it wasn't until I showed up for the open house on the seventh morning that he finally ran on it.

Here were the steps I took by using LOTS of treats (I used puppy food because the kibbles are small but they taste really good to adult dogs):

1) exposed him to the treadmill. just had him around it, while giving him treats every time he would get close to it/sniff it
2) turned the treadmill on, then gave him treats when he would get close to it/sniff it
3) with the treadmill off, I had him get on the belt (lots of treats)
4) with the treadmill off, I had him jump on the treadmill at the back and walk all the way off the front of it (the treadmill was designed to allow that for the pigs)
5) repeat, repeat, repeat step 4
6) turn the treadmill on to the slowest speed and coaxed him up on it (he would immediately turn around and run off)
7) LOTS of treats and lots of repetition of step 6
8) had him run all the way across the treadmill with it running (like step 4) - give lots of treats when he would go all the way across
9) repeat 8 for about 2 hours
10) with leash on, have him get up on the treadmill like he was going to run across it, but slow him down a bit by pulling on the leash - give lots of treats and repeat
11) the morning of the open house he ran on the treadmill the way he was supposed to for the first time - he got lots of treats for that.

the idea is you give treats for doing a baby step, then after a while you stop giving treats until he does two baby steps. Then you stop giving treats until he does three baby steps, etc, etc.

Just remember to keep it fun, be VERY positive, and give lots of treats. Try and keep training sessions short so the dog doesn't get frustrated with what you're asking him to do and so you can end with him doing something properly.

Nice instructions. I may have to revisit this task. I got both of mine to run on it, but they freak out and jump off. It was cool though, a night after i tried training BUB, i was on the computer, and i hear this clunk, and he is standing on the treadmill staring at me. lol

You stopped it before the dog was done.

Nice! Sounds like you're just a couple evenings of simple training from having him run on the treadmill!

He's a pit bull. He doesn't know when to stop. lol

He almost ran himself to death the first time I took him bicycling. He collapsed next to my truck when we finished, so I picked him up and waded into the river with him in my arms to cool him off (he was overheating)

Yeah i think so, Did you see my little girl dogs tricks? I like training dogs, I think my male might be a little dense though, well as far as doing advanced tricks. How is your Great Dane, i always wanted one of them? Is he real mellow?

What's the dog trick?

My Great Dane is awesome. I'll have to see if I can capture some video of her someday (the only video camera I have is built into my laptop, so kind of hard to capture a dog). She's 1.5 years old, and very much a puppy (mellow when she sleeps, but active when she plays). She loves to play, loves attention, and gets along great with everyone. Every person who has ever met her falls immediately in love. I've had friends threaten to steal her, other friends offer to buy her, and another friend tell me that she wants to bite the dog's ear because of how cute she is. LOL She has an amazing personality, which I have heard is similar to a lot of other danes (so it's a breed trait). If you can stand to have a 110+ pound dog around, you will absolutely love to have a dane. There isn't a day that has gone by were she hasn't made me laugh by something she has done.

Awesome! I haven't tried to get my dane to do any rolling (she needs the whole width of a room to roll over because of how long her legs are). I'll have to try and get a video of a few of her commands.
