This is going to be a long read. Please bear with me.
I was involved in an incident today on the freeway system in Phoenix. A pickup, traveling in the fast lane at ~80, had a dog in the back. The dog fell out. I pulled over to the side in an attempt to rescue the dog. As I was doing this, cars were swerving from lane to lane in a desperate series of maneuvers to avoid the dog.
Result: A really severe car crash in which the leg of one driver was broken, the front of her car sheared off, and her daughter cut up. I know because I lifted her out of the car and kept her calm. Additionally, I was able to grab the injured dog and put him in the rear seating area of the Titan. I took him, with DPS permission to an animal hospital where he is badly injured, but will recover.
Total damages: 1 car totaled, 2 women hurt, 1 pickup badly damaged from the above, 1 dog with a broken pelvis, broken front leg and broken jaw, not to mention severe scrapes and cuts.
Moral: PLEASE, PLEASE, if you are going to transport your dog, either put him in the cab with you, or tie him in the bed! Dogs don't know speed!

I personally wouldn't put a dog in the bed period, but that is just ASANINE. Glad you were there to help!

Thanks for the reminder! I once had a dog who jumped out of the bed of the truck when I was going around 30mph...he was leashed but his leash was not short enough... I looked out and he was hanging by his collar! It was a horrible site! I've learned my lesson from that point forward...

No injuries to the dog occurred that day thank God!

You are a good man trying to save the pup and putting your life in serious danger! I hope the mom and daughter recover as well!

Thanks Chicks for the kind words. No, I'm not really a hero or anything like that. Any one of us would have done the exact same thing.

As an update, the dog will be treated by a vet and cared for by our dog rescue. He will be kept at a foster home until he is fully recovered, then adopted to a fine family.

I've seen lots of people driving down the interstate with dogs in the back. I've seen some doing it with flat bed trucks and the dogs were not on a leash and they were pacing behind the rear window. Scary stuff. My brother's dog rides in the front seat.
