Bush fuel standards will raise car prices by $5k

Geez! As if things aren't bad enough with gas prices and interest rates soaring skyward while income and jobs are headed in the opposite direction along with personal savings and Corporate pension plans. It now seems that according to GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has placed a tab of $5,000 per vehicle for the fuel economy initiative. Lutz' comments came in response to a recent Supreme Court decision that the EPA has the express right to regulate carbon dioxide emissions.
A Bush administration analysis of the initiative placed an industry cost of $117 billion between 2010 and 2017, with over $40 billion coming from GM alone. The plan, which aims to decrease US oil dependency by 20% by 2017, is focused on several industries, but the car and light truck market could be hit extremely hard. Lutz and other industry leaders are keen to the idea of better-utilizing E85 instead of what Blogger Bob calls an "unaffordable solution". Currently, there are only 1,100 E85-capable gas stations out of 170,000 in the US.

Has Lutz ever heard of direct injection high pressure small displacement diesels

I have not seen pricing on CDI 3.0 L diesel being offered in the Jeep GC yet, but my guess if mass produced and offered by the big three across the board the option price would come way down.

In Europe these high tech diesels account for 75 to 80 % of the new car market., they get higher real world gas milage and cost less to produce than hybrids

But if you use E85, you will find that you will get anywhere from 25 to 45% lower fuel mileage. I know because I have tried it in my GMC YUKON. So you save .15 per gallon but lose more than that on reduced mileage??

I hear ya on the E-85. What I can't figure out is if auto's account for only 20% of the greenhouse gasses introduced into the atmosphere why aren't we hearing about any initiative for whatever it is that's dumping the other 80%?

Joe, you got that right. E-85 is a sham. Car and Driver did an exhaustive story on the subject July last year. I copied it into this thread:

OR

you can read the original article here:

It is very informative reading.
