When does it pay to buy a Itty Bitty car too? (A study of insanity)

For my work I drive over 130 miles a day, 6 days a week but I don't always need the truck. So today when oil jumped to $133 a barrel and rumors ""Since it was spoken, so it will be" of $200 a barrel oil making gas $7 and Diesel $7.80 a gallon by next year. It got me wondering when it would pay for me to buy a little gas miser, park it in the big city and just drive my truck back and forth from it and here's what I came up with. (Due to driving at night out here in the country. Deer, Cows and Horses mandate me driving a large vehicle for the sake of my life.)

33 gallons of Diesel at $7.80 Gallon = $257 a week- $1028 a month

Since I figure I can find a little car that will double the MPG of my truck with no problem I then came up with this.

16.5 Gallons of gas at $7 a Gallon = $115.5 a week - $462 a month for fuel.

To recap,
Truck $1028 a month
Itty Bitty car $462 a month

Not a pretty sight huh?

Its the new killer! I love driving the Tundra everywhere. But find myself doing all the running around in the wifes 4 banger 07 Camry. A check today relealed 34mpg. Now thats with my lead foot. Not to mention the savings would purchase a great mpg vehicle. I've always been the same though. That safer feeling in a large vehicle.

This is why I'm intending to ride a motorcycle more and more for my commute and when I don't need to carry much with me.

Some have said that small used cars with good gas mileage are harder to find now. Most are selling well above blue book value.

$462 plus the car payment and insurance...probably still cheaper though.

Making it home in one piece = Priceless

We have the same road hazards that you mentioned, plus the more-than-occasional Moose. Think of an an ectomorphic cow with a 5-foot antler spread. They like to hang out alongside the roadways to lick the salt off the road in the winter/spring and to escape the mosquitos/gnats in the summer. And, oh right, the moose makes the cow seem genius!
