Another sign of slow truck sales: Dodge

Chrysler idles Dodge Ram production in Mexico

By STEPHEN DOWNER | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

Chrysler LLC has stopped production of Dodge Rams at its Saltillo assembly plant for two weeks, a company spokesman said today.

Manuel Duarte, corporate communications director for Chrysler in Mexico, described the stoppage as a "temporary shutdown" and "part of our requirements."

"This is nothing that we have not talked about before," he said. "It will be the same until the situation in the U.S. changes because they are the main market for our exports."

Chrysler produced 169,301 Ram pickups in Saltillo in 2007, up from 153,890 in 2006, according to the Automotive News Data Center.

The Saltillo plant, in northern Mexico, employs about 2,000, including hourly workers and administrative staff. The plant closed Monday, June 9, and will reopen June 23, Duarte told Automotive News.

Union officials were unavailable for comment today.

I think they make the heavy duty models at that plant, I would think Dodge is already making the new 09 Rams, and I can't see them stopping production on the brand new model.
