Congress stopped the bailout... because the UAW wouldn't agree to a change in their contract. Looks like it probably won't happen this year, maybe after New Year's. I almost bought some GM preferred stock yesterday. Good that I didn't. If the UAW can't agree to save their own ass, then I say let the big 3 go bankrupt and watch those pensions go bye-bye.

Supposing the average vehicle cost $50K, that's 6000 vehicles per state. I'm sure there are a lot of cities who would love to have government provided emergency vehicles. A lot of small towns are lucky to have 1 old police car. They could use another. Spend the money on America, not to fund the pensions of a bunch of suits who can't run a company. Americans get their tax money to work for them, the big 3 are saved for now, and their workers get to keep their jobs and their pension plans.
Great idea except that all of are emergency vehicles will continue to be crappy cars that require extensive long term maintenance.

Good point! I'd like them to actually be able to respond to an emergncy. LOL!

Actually with all the cuts in police and emergency response the vehicles might outnumber the people.

But instead of one crappy vehicle, they will have two crappy vehicles. Maybe one of them will make it to the scene.

Sadly, that is the truth.

I may be opening up a can of worms with this, but here's how I feel about it (see the link below). Disclaimer: I am NOT anti-union, but I am anti-out of control union, and this mess is a perfect example of why greed and out of control unions can be the end of a company. This is not the only reason they are in the mess they are in, but I believe it is a big chunk of the problem. The other big chunk being the greedy executives taking more than they are worth.

Good article. I agree with you Patcap38. These guys are out of control and all that we expect is they manage their business responsibly. They have had since the late 60's to respond to the threat of overseas auto makers, but stubbornly insisted that they knew what we want. WOW!

WARNING.... a short rant, LOL!

I'm watching the union representing helicopter pilots trying to do the same thing to our industry, and one of our competitors bit, signing a renewed collective bargaining agreement with very large wage increases for their pilots, apparently in the interest of a quick contract renewal (i.e., they drank the kool-aid).

The only problem for that competitor is that all of the other helicopter companies haven't followed them in pilot wages so far (and may not do so in the future). Why? Most are worried about the economy, the possibility of significant oil company cut-backs in the Gulf because of oil prices in the $45/barrel range, the already crappy financial performance of most Air Medical helicopter operations, and the fact that adding exhorbitant increased payroll costs for pilots (and then you have to do something for the other employees) makes no sense in the current economic environment unless our industry wants to end up like the Big 3. Generally unions don't get this... they just want more and more, often to the detriment of the very workers they supposedly represent. What a shame......
