New EV in 2012

Here's a pretty sweet looking all electric vehicle available in 2012.

TESLA - Model S

The little catch about seating 7...it says 5 adults and 2 car seats (2 kids). I don't think it's that bad a price either considering a Prius runs close to $40K. And this looks a lot better.

I think I saw a special on this company. It is founded by a bunch of silicone valley yuppies that thought the automotive industry has been poorly managed thus the reason why the big 3 have failed to compete. They started off running the biz like a software company but have since made some tweaks more in line with traditional auto manufacturers. It will be interesting to see if these guys can make it.

I'd rather have their original Tesla Roadster:
Tesla Motors

But it is nice to see that they are making larger cars now.

The Tesla Roadster is the far one from the camera. In the first run, it spun the tires for half the distance. Here is the second run:

The cool part about electric cars is that they are easy to upgrade. You can either drop a second motor in or swap out the motor to make it faster.

The problem with this vehicle is range. Although it is advertised as 300 miles, that is a best case scenario. Do you want to listen to the radio? Your range will be less. Do you want to use the AC? Your range will be less. Driving somewhere at night? You guessed it, using lights will cost you range. Driving aggressively will also affect your range. An English TV show did a road test of the Tesla Roadster and reportedly only went about 60 miles before needing a recharge. This vehicle is advertised as have a 244 mile range. Admittedly, they were driving it very hard, doing 0-60 runs and such. Many people do get 200 miles or more from a charge, but they are using accessories sparingly and not driving aggressively. There is no question that electric vehicles are in our future, but before they become mainstream, the energy storage system will have to improve by a factor of 2 or 3. Perhaps a better near term solution is an "Extended Range Electric Vehicle", like the Chevy Volt, which will be sold in limited quantities starting next year. This is essentially a plug in electric vehicle with an on-board generator, capable of producing enough energy to propel the vehicle when the battery gets too low. The Volt will have a 40 mile all electric range, after which the gas engine will kick in and run the generator. GM says that studies have shown that 70% of the population will use no gas with this vehicle because their daily commutes are less than 40 miles.

Good write up Tony. All i have to say as far as the future of electric cars is, there are solutions to every problem. Recreating the wheel to solve this energy issue is a distraction and will never work. The U.S. needs to adopt Fischer-Tropsch process as a solution, and we will be much better off.
