Future of the 1/2 ton pickup

Anybody else see the day where the 1/2 ton pickup could possibly take a special permit to own? The more I read the more I foresee them being phased out for the common person and only being sold to businesses, farmers and maybe people who own large trailers but these trailers will have to meet a certain weight limit for you to qualify and then you'll only be able to drive it when towing that trailer. For people who don't meet the qualifications you'll be able to access one by renting it from your local car rental business or Lowe's, Home depot, etc. I know at first it seems like it would be hard to enforce but all it would take is a special color tag or sticker on your tag to do it. Any thoughts?

I honestly think there will be civil unrest before we even get that far. People been sleeping and not paying attention, but things have changed and people are watching, and that will not happen especially with our elected officals being under the microscope 24/7.

I do see that day coming. Just like I can buy and own a Peterbuilt now, I think I will be able to buy a 1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton in the future without restrictions. I may have to pay more because it may get a gas guzzler type tax. I see that as more likely.

In New York and some other places, doesn't a new 1/2 ton truck (GVWR > 6K pounds) have to be registered as a commercial truck? That means higher registration cost and it limits where you can park your truck since commercial vehicles can't be parked on most residential street over night. Only way to get around that is to install a camper on the bed to limit how much can fit in the bed of the truck.

If they do that around here, people will be ????ed. At least half the vehicles on the road are half ton or bigger trucks and SUVs.

I agree with Tony... I think the government will simply tax light trucks until the average person cannot afford to buy one (kinda like cigarettes and other tobacco products are getting today!).

I have a few liberal friends, let me tell you 3 of the 5 are livid with what Obamalama is doing and the other 2/5 are getting nervous, seems like my common sense b$%^&*g has paid off, they are finally coming out of the trance.

Funny you say handout condoms. The NEA, National Educators Association is FOR ABORTION, they cameout with it early this summer. Talk about f'ed up. If there ever was a organization that was not logical, that is one! Someone I know in another state is a teacher, but they are not tenured yet, when that time comes a nasty letter will be on its way to the NEA.

Here in PA the Tundra gets rated as a class 3 truck because it is 7001-9000 pounds GVWR. That's a big jump where I see the Fords and Chevys falling just under that. Class 2 is like $80/yr and I pay $153/yr for the 200 lbs the Tundra is over the 7k. Grrrrrr!

All good points. What got me thinking about this is that now that the cash for clunkers program is over they are starting to tally up what vehicles were turned in for what new vehicle (UH-OH!).

What I'm starting to read and see on the news is that the majority of the trades were pickup trucks and they were traded for cars like the Toyota Corolla leading some to speculate and point out that people who don't need trucks own them and are just being wasteful................UH-OH!
