CNN says keep your cars.

According to the article, you can save a lot of money by driving your vehicle until it quits running.

"and a 1994 Ford Ranger pick-up that had gone 488,000 miles."

That's a lot of driving every year. I would hate to have to drive 35K miles every year.

CNN can generally but basically, if you buy a car, and keep if for a decent amount of time, you can save money. That's not news though...

I have to agree about driving 35K a year... Time for a new job.

I do almost that. Fifty four miles a day round trip, plus other running around, towing, whatever. I keep them until something really major breaks.

Do you think they calculated the amount of money spent for repairs & The feeling of confidence that you'll get were your going when your not driving a car till it dies?

That security factor is what makes most people trade. I would have kept my Dakota except for that. Its still a good truck, but broke down by the road with a load of horses is very unattactive. The last six months the Dakota got: Rack and pnion replaced, U joints (both ends), Bilstein Shocks, New AWD unit. Time for a new one before the tranny, 4WD etc went. It appears to be in perfect condition now, but the next guy can test it.

I drove my last car until it got to a point where repairs would cost more than it was worth. I loved that car and was fine with the lack of modern safety features. The repairs and the fact that I needed a truck led me to get the Tundra.

That's me I just went over 110,000 miles and my truck won't be 3 years old until the 11th. The really sad thing is I own 3 other 4 wheel street legal vehicles plus a Harley that all get driven by me. But then again I can also just walk out on the porch and take leak so to me that's worth the extra little bit of driving. "Yes the greatest thing about living in the boonies is it's one big toilet!"

Oh well, still not keeping a car that long

My commute is 30 miles each way, and I still don't do that many miles in one year because we have several vehicles.
