Still no, word back from Toyota about my tailgate. I called the service department at Concord Toyota again last week and they said they haven't forgotten me but don't have any word yet. Does it usually take so long for Toyota to get around to making a call on customer issues. I will post the response whenever it comes!

Send a message directly to Toyota yourself. They usually respond pretty quick.

Smile Tailgate replaced under 1 time goodwill repair.

27 Jan 2009, a closing update to my previous posts:

To my satisfaction the tailgate has been replaced with what is purported to be the latest tailgate for my vehicle. I am very satisfied even though it was a long time coming.

I was patient and willingly waited as I did not want to rush the dealer and be given a duplicate tailgate or just have mine repaired. I had accidentally punctured the outer skin of the tailgate (boat trailer coupling struck it) just above the bumper and that was determined to have "compromised" the integrity of the tailgate itself. I agreed with that posture and did not argue the point. It was well made I suppose. In any event after the Toyota Rep inspected the vehicle and we talked about the issues I had seen here on the forum he believed that the tailgate could not be honestly replaced under warranty but that he would submit it for a goodwill repair, which resulted in the tailgate replacement. They even replace the top protector for the tailgate which I did not expect but surely appreciated.

To say the least I am totally satisfied now and my faith in Toyota to stand by there "Tuf Truck" motto is restored. Tomorrow morning the Tundra will be pulling my travel trailer to the Eel and Smith Rivers for some Stealhead fishing.

Life is Good,
Jim

PS: thanks to all on the forum for your support and tips.

I just purchased an 08 built on 8/08. I haven't loaded my ATV yet (Honda Rancher 400). I plan on taking it out this weekend. Should I be concerned or is this an issue for earlier models?

I'm really getting worried about buying this truck (engine chatter when cold, "sinking dash", and now wimpy tailgate..... Please someone re-assure me, I traded in a perfect Tacoma!!!

Thanks...

In spite of what onpoint says (lol!) TUNDRACOUPE, you have an excellent truck, and I assure you that you will have less problems with this truck than any from the Big 3! A lot of us have had none of these problems, others have had a small issue or two, and only a few have had major problems with the truck. Talk with any Big 3 owner and I suspect you will hear a lot worse. My 2 cents!

I still load my ATV in the bed of my truck all the time. No problems. The tailgates were reinforced for 08 Tundras.
