Greymax tail gate

My truck had 180 miles on it when this happened. (Less than 24 hours old) It happened with a 600# Honda Rubicon being loaded with an ATV ramp. I did not even finish puting the ATV into the truck because I noticed the failure before the back wheels even made it to the tailgate. You can see that there is only one tire track on the gate. The Trundra is a Limited Crewmax. Still a great truck just has one minor fixable problem.

My tail gate failed when I loaded a golf cart in the back and drove to the desert. At first I thought it was just a fluke but it seems there is a pattern here. toyota Case # 200710220388

I loaded my ATV of about 700 lbs, with me (280) on it for a total of close to 1,000 lbs on my Tundra using ramps 2 times!

I have a pic taken at the LineX meet of mine just starting to crack. I'll post it when I get home.

Edit: as promised

Mine has not failed yet, but give it time...

So I was at the Toyota dealership today and checked out the tailgates.
They had about 30 tundras on the lot, 3 of which appear to be beefed up.
Yes, I looked at everyone of them.
So, it looks like Toyota is defiantly doing something about the weak corner issue.
I would expect that if anyone's fails, they are going to be replaced with one that has been welded in the right places sooner or later.
The welds shown are on both sides, there are also 2 more welds that are hidden, this was confirmed to me by someone who works at the IN manufacturing plant (who wished to remain anonymous).

The gate is substantially stronger.
On the gate with out the welds, I can flex the corner by pushing down hard with my hands, I can actually see it moving and beginning to split.
On the welded gate, I cannot get it to flex or move at all, even by standing on it and putting all my 220lbs on the corner, and bouncing.

Those that are worry warts, the fix is here and is spreading, don't lose faith in Toyota, they are fixing this and doing what's right.

Welded

Welded

UnWelded

Same Issue with my 2008 mfg'd in 4-08

I purchased my truck last week. I found this forum so I checked my tailgate. Sure enough, no extra weld on the tail gate. It hasn't failed yet but I haven't loaded anything that would strain this joint. As msxjw noted, some flex can be seen if you put just your own weight on the corner of the tailgate.

I also noticed on zukIzzy's post that his failure occurred near the middle of the gate which would indicate that the entire length of this weld is weak.

What's the suggestion for taking action? I don't want this thing to break a few years down the road and then be out of warranty coverage. I also plan on installing a Line-X bed liner next week and don't want to pay for lining the tailgate twice! Will Toyota do anything about a preventative claim?

The truck is a 2008 CrewMax 4X4. I believe it was manufactured in TX in 04-08 accodring to the VIN plate inside the driver door.

Do you know where the two additional mistery welds are? I've been thinking for a while I want to take my tailgate to a shop and just have them weld the crap outta the tailgate; all the way down both sides. I've done some preliminary checking, and there doesn't seem like there will be clearence issue.

Thoughts?

Edit: Nevermind, just read this post http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/gen...html#post21689

I'll just wait 'til it fails I guess, though I really don't want to get my tailgate re-Line-X-ed.
