Air Conditioning Issue

I remember reading something previously about this issue, but I can't find. Every once in a while, when I put the AC on in my truck, I get a weird odor coming from the vents. It happens occassionally and is very annoying. I haven't brought it to the dealer yet. Wanna see if it's an easy fix. Thanks

i used to get that odor in my 03 access cab with the ac on low and the in cab recirculation on. i pushed the button to allow fresh air in for about 5 minutes or so and then turned the recirculation back on and it went away.... maybe built up ac fumes or something inside the unit?

Do you have something dead in your air filter?

That was my guess. Check the cabin air filter.

A/C drain nipple

In years past I dealt with the problem on new vehicles. There was a drain nipple that would get plugged up or sometime just stiff from the A/C not being used. The customer complaint would be the same - stale air or a smell from the A/C vents. By squeezeing the rubber nipple on the drain tube the water would drain properly and the problem was solved. When I encountered the problem on my Tundra I couldn't find the drain tube. I checked with the local Toyota dealer and they said it is concealed and takes maybe one and a half hours to get to it. That seemed excessive time wise so I said I would bring it back in and have them take care of in on my next service.

Another symptom of that being the problem is that when the A/C in running on most vehicles there is condensation water dripping from the car. On our Acura it is constant and significant. On the Tundra I never see it. (that is why I went looking and told the dealer)

Sound familiar to any of you?

That actually makes more sense than the air filter. Did they give any clue as to the location of the drain tube?

Jim, good explanation for why the smell might be there and makes a lot of sense. I'll look through some of the pdfs I have and see if I can find anything about where the drain might be. Or maybe look under my truck and get an idea of where it should be.
