Maybe I am thinking along the wrong lines, but don't the 5.7L motors have overhead cams? If so, then there are no lifters, right?

According to the engine manual the overhead cams operate a roller rocker arm with a hydraulic lash adjuster. Rather different than most overhead cam engines I have dealt with but these were motorcycle engines with shims for adjustment. Sure glad the 5.7 Tundra don't use this system.

I had a bad knock at about 32,000 miles. It took Toyota a couple of weeks to diagnose the problem and order the correct parts. Toyota replaced the VVTI gears and performed a top engine clean. The total cost for this repair was $1699.91, however it was covered under warranty. There is still a slight ticking noise, but nothing like it was. Bottom line Toyota did admit there was a problem and to their credit they fixed it. Please let me know if you guys have any questions.
