| 5 lug hubs? Anyone know why Toyota went back to 5-lug hubs on the 2007 Tundra? My '07 Reg. Cab 5.7L 4X4 (long bed) has 5-lug hubs...the 2000 Tundra SR5 Ext Cab 4.7L 4X4 I traded in for it had 6-lug hubs...so did the '97 T-100 SR5 Ext. Cab 4X4 I traded in for that.....you would think a truck rated to tow 10,300 Lbs. would have more lugs...anyone have any ideas? 2007 Reg. | Toyota is usually pretty thorough in this regard, my guess is they tested both and didn't see a strength benefit, or saw a cost benefit without a loss in strength. More lugs means more holding strength right? but more lugs means less metal between the lugs.. so which one is better?

| Great answer! Are the axels built by Toyota or farmed out?

| I forget the exact #'s, but the new Tundras studs are something like 16-18% larger in diameter than the older Tundra's 6 studs. This means, at least in theory that the new Tundra's studs are actually a little stronger than the old Tundra's 6 lugs system.

| The studs are 9/16th diameter, which is fairly stout and the distance between studs is 5.9".....or 150mm. The old five quarter ton military jeeps only had 5 lugs. The rearends are made by Hino, a medium duty truck manufacturer. Other than the fact that they are a semi-floating design they have a differential and axle strength similar to the Dana 70 and GM 14 bolt. |
