You know that deal under your steering wheel where you can plug a OBD reader into? This is the technology that the links are referring to. Our truck uses a new CAN system, or something like that lol

oh, I get it. But doesn't CAN remind you of when you were a kid and used two of them - a piece of string to play telephone? LOL
Nonetheless- thanks for the layman terms to help me understand.

Wow....this was way over my head! It reminds me of the times I stop by my machine shop and the machinist starts talking about all this stuff...usually he is 3 sheets to the wind and still manages to know all about CAN and how it works. Then he thinks that somehow I should be able to grasp the idea and actually learn.

I just look at him with a blank stare.

Well this is one of those things that it's worth working an overtime to pay someone else to fix it (What ever it is).

From my understanding, it uses one wire to communicate to a bunch of different systems. So it's a bunch of cans on a single string. I'll let the pros mess with it.

Sign of the times hehe.. we've got SAN (storage area network), LAN (local area network), WAN (wide area network), MAN (metro area network), PAN (Personal area network), CAN (controller area network)... and many more!

Let me make this simple.. you can connect your SAN to your LAN via your WAN that rides on top of the MAN, but you can't connect to your CAN without a USB PAN, because the protocols are different.. duh!

CAN is a good thing.. ODB was a good thing, mind you, but CAN is more of an open standard for a robust network that allows ECUs to communicate in electrically noisy environments. The CAN model essentially operates at layer 1 & 2 of the OSI model (physical & logical) to define standards for connectiong, and communicating on the network. It's faster than ODB, and soon you'll be able to just have a USB adapter to plug your laptop into your CAN and just read, adjust, modify, upload anything you want. (assuming you have some software that's able to talk to your Tundra).

The ODB port on the tundra is talking ODBII but it is actually CAN under the hood.. so they're has to be something that's converting ODB talk to CAN for the backwards compatibility. All cars will require CAN in 2008.. and going forward.

I, personally, can't wait!

I just realized that was alot of jibberish.. look at it this way. CAN is a network like your LAN - you're connected to the internet via one cable - and you can talk to billions of computers out there.

CAN is the same.. one wire, and multiples ECUs can talk together because they have an addressing scheme defined by the CAN standards.. so multiple controllers can talk together just like your home computer is communicating with multiple computers on the internet...
