Trailer brake controllers

I'm thinking about getting a trailer to haul the ATVs. Probably 6x10 tandem axle. Weighs about 950# empty and with the two atvs probably 1600-1700#. My question is do you think I need to get brakes on the trailer and if so, what's a good brake controller?

You don't need trailer brakes on that size trailer with ATV's. If you ever plan to haul 4 to 5k lbs and up on it I would say get the brakes on the trailer just incase. I had a controller put in my truck and they cost about $100 buck installed, any know name would be good.......not even sure what brand mine is........I pull a 5k lbs travel trailer with brakes and they work great!!!!!

The tundra is pre-wired for the controller so install is very simple......

There's been a couple of times when having brakes on a lighter trailer also helped. I haul a tandem axle 16' Featherlite cargo trailer. I carry 1 to 6 dirt bikes in it (about 2,200lbs to 3,700lbs total depending on number), but in slick conditions (mud and snow) it's saved my butt. Not sure if you get much of either down there, but I've also had some near misses with cars pulling out in front of me and I'm sure the brakes made the difference.

You might want to check your state laws. In Calif any trailer weighing over 1500 lbs (trailer and cargo) requires trailer brakes.

I like this one:

grimmkt,
If you don't want to spend as much as what the Prodigy cost, I have the Voyager and it works great:

Yep, I was just looking at them. What's involved in installing one?

Very simple... you should have a Tundra adapter (mine was in the glove box) that attaches to the wiring harness of the brake controller. If not, you can get one from Yoda. The other end of the Toyota adapter plugs into a socket (look carefully as the socket has a cap on it to protect it) behind the drivers side kick panel (the socket is actually located near the top of the electrical panel located there). After you mount the brake controller itself, whalla, you're done!

I wondered what that wire harness was in the glove box...sounds easy enough.
