"Last year I towed the same trailer with a 2007 Honda Ridgeline, 3.5 liter V6, 5spd. auto. It ran in third most of the time. The max towing on that vehicle is 5k. I avg. 10.9mpg on a 180 miles run trip over the same road." Wow, that would be considered outstanding milage for a small engine w that load and speed in 3rd gear. I pull a 21' HTT with 5600# GVWR. Locked in at 60, I can get better than 11 mpg. My BIL got just over 9mpg pulling his fiver with a GMC 1500 and F250 V10, both gassers. You could try to slow down, that would help considerably. Most trailer tires are not meant to be driven over 65mph, and there is no safety factor in that speed rateing.

Silversurfer You need to slow down and drive gently. We towed my 24 ft Airstream down the Blue Ridge Parkway (50-55 mph) and got an honest 14.1 mpg. I might add that this is a fairly light trailer and the front is rounded, so not quite like pulling a barn door down the road. One trick I have used and I might suggest is to watch your instantaineous fuel economy. It shows just how bad it gets when you accelerate hard and downshift a lot. It also shows how good it is when you stay in 6th gear and coast downhill when possible. I usually get 18 mpg solo no problem when on the highway at 60-65 mph. I have gotten 21 mpg when I try real hard, like pretending there is an egg under the accelerator pedal and always coasting when going downhill. This was on a 200 trip from Lynchburg, VA to Norfolk, VA all flat land driving. 08 DC 5.7 2WD SR5 OEM backup camera, Led interior lights, Leer 100XQ Cap, 1966 Airstream 24ft. tt

It does make a significant difference when you press just slightly on the accelerator. I get pretty close to 19mpg avg. I use my scangauge all the time and watch the mpg reading like Airstream Hauler said. If I could change the curve on the pedal I would. It needs to make smaller throttle input at the beginning of the curve and more later. It's very difficult not to waste fuel just from the road being bumpy and your foot bouncing. :-)

| You guys are waaaayyyy too worried about gas mileage..... let the beast loose while gas prices are reasonable, lol!

I have a boat 20' about 4000#. If I run at 75/80 I get 10 mpg, if I run at 55 I get 15mpg. 55 feels like I could run that fast so I shoot for 65 (12+ mpg) as long as I can stand the slow pace.

Those really aren't bad towing numbers for a truck the size of ours. I moved my sister to Kent, OH from SC in a Chevy Trailblazer and a 6x12 utility trailer. This was straight up I-77 through West Virginia with a lot of up and downs through the mountains. The best I got out of the trailblazer was 8.5. I figured I would get better mileage coming back down with an empty trailer, but that was not the case. Of course it didn't help that the TB had 3.42 gears. Guess that big frontal area is the big mileage killer. So I wouldn't worry about 8-11 MPG while towing. I had no get up and go with the Trailblazer, so its much easier towing with the Tundra.
