Obviously some of you guys have no problems towing heavy weights. The #'s that everyone is stating concerning payload as published in the manual are perfect world #'s.
When I put my truck on the scale, the published #'s went right out the window. while each truck will be different depending upon options, tires etc., here are the #'s for my truck.
The manual says my truck weighs 5645lbs, actual weight with a full tank of fuel, me (150lbs), 10lb dog and maybe another 50 lbs in the bed and interior=6030lbs.
My tires weigh at least 100lbs more than the stock tires, Linex adds 50-75 lbs.
GVWR is 7100lbs, subtract the weight of the truck, 6030lbs and that leaves me with 1070lbs payload capacity, published capacity is 1560, 490lbs less than published.
For me, the bottom line is to weigh your individual truck for real world #'s, then you can make an informed decision about how much weight you can tow/carry legally and if you want to exceed that weight, at least you will know for sure what you are doing.

Awww, hell, I can't do that without the trailer! My 5600# HTT will run the rpm up to 3800 on steep interstate climbs with me maintaining 60MPH.

I second that. I have a 5500# TT and I never get below 2500 rpm pulling it @ 70 MPH. I mainly hang around 3000 RPM to stay in the good torque when I'm in hill country.

I tow a 2007 wood framed Pilgrim 267BHSS travel trailer. It weighs 9K. I think it is one of the last wood framed TT built. I use the Equalizer Weight Distribution hitch and try to stay between 60 - 65 MPH and get 8.5 MPG towing. I don't have any problems pulling it, but my Tundra is awful thirsty when towing it. BTW, the new Tekonsha P3 brake controller does a great job stopping!!! I highly recommend it!

My RPM's are more like what cmomo0128 said. I try to keep the RPM's around 3K which is just above 60 MPH on flat land. Up hills, I'm in hitting in the 4K RPM range easy.

Skyhammer is dead nuts right on. I believe that you just can't tow a fifth wheel trailer legally with a half ton truck. It definately has the power and may feel ok, but do you want to get into an accident and deal with a law suit when it comes out that you were over the weight limit (GVWR)? I don't think I would want to go there. Especially as sue happy as folks are in this country.

The 10,500 trailer limit is really for a naked truck without anything. I have not run the numbers lately, but by the time you add the weight of people, fuel, cap and stuff, the real trailer weight limit is probably 9,000 lbs. max.
