| Here is an email I received from Toyota Motors today about the cam failure. Quote: Originally Posted by TMS USA My pleasure--BTW, contrary to what amounts to a sensationalized story appearing today in a Midwest newspaper, there is no recall for the Tundra. As posted yesterday, the camshaft failures were caused by improperly manufactured parts that were discovered very early in the initial production phase, but not before a few units were assembled and shipped--20 that we are aware of, and some of those are actually in company service, not in the hands of customers. A correction was immediately implemented, and we are working to ensure customer satisfaction and confidence in the product by those owners who did experience the failure by replacing the engine. That's about as sensational as it gets for this story, albeit make no mistake that we are embarrassed by this incident and regret any concerns, worry, even anger experienced by those customers whose engines did fail. Toyota conducts a very thorough investigation of production anomalies that result in any kind of product performance problem. That's underway now. Once concluded, tmsusa will be happy to report to interested members here any additional information that may be of interest to our customers and other consumers

| Hi everyone i am a master toyota tech for 17 years now and i would just like to put everyones mind at ease if i may. We have not seen or heard anything on this problem that is being circulated at my dealership or in the entire central atlantic region. If a known problem does exist let me assure you toyota will take care of it and then some. I challenge any one out there to show me a car company that treats its customers better, there are none. ive seen toyota give people entire FREE engines on vehicles that have not had oil changes in 40k miles plus, yes believe it. They have put engines in cars for vehicles with 100k plus for free in some cases. If you are a toyota owner they value you as a family member not just a customer. On another site one guy had reported this unusual failure on his early model tundra and this is what came of it. He got a new long block(entire engine )for free, a platinum 7yr 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty with no deductible, one month,s payment applied to his loan, and 150$ gift card to use on whatever he wanted. Now someone please tell me what else they could do for the guy. This problem is very miniscule as far as numbers of trucks go that they do not want to call it a recall. Widespred false panic for a possible 100 vehicles NOT i agree with their approach. The big 3 are looking for any problem info they can leak out to try to tarnish the image of what is by far tha best 1/2 ton pickup on the market today. So just enjoy your trucks out there and let toyota take care of the rest. By the way did i mention what a kickass ride this truck is lol. |

| I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. With so much money involved, Toyota is on this with a vengeance! ANY AND EVERY new car manufacturer has had problems during a new model release. The jump from engineering/design to production/real world is huge! It just takes a little time....... |

| Engine Failure I have a 2008 Tundra and it has 30k as far as mileage goes. Driving on the road on Wednesday after work I noticed my 4 Lo light started blinking which i thought was weird, then my battery light went on, then it hit me that the truck wasn't even running (I had my music going and couldn't hear it). Well needless to say, I tried to turn it back on and it would fire up but acted as if it was shutting off at the same time. Me and a buddy hauled it to the nearest dealership last night and they still haven't found the problem. All the service guy said to me was that it didn't look good, so that sucks. Thankfully the warranty goes up to 36k. Now I am vehicleless and hoping the thing gets fixed. Otherwise I love the truck but it goes to show that Toyota's aren't perfect. |

Sorry to hear this. Welcome to the site and please let us know what they find out. Hopefully it's an electrical problem and not the engine. |

| I have to agree with Squid, most likely control module related. Toyota designs thier vehicles to be safe, not just for the passenger's sake. There is probably some issue that, if left uncorrected, it would have caused more and larger issues. The control module should have shut it down before a catastrophic (expensive) fix is needed. It does save Toyota money to do this, but it is annoying to be without a vehicle until it's fixed. I'm at 35,700 miles, and I've still got some unaddressed issues, but have the extended bumper to bumper.

| Sounds to me like a bad MAF sensor. Have they checked that?
