| No Diesel for Toyota According to Automotive News the big 6 (Honda, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Nissan and Toyota) have given up on Diesels here in the States due to spiraling cost and the EPA (They didn't say that about the EPA but I am). Historically a diesel engine typically delivers fuel economy 20 percent to 30 percent better than that of a gasoline engine but now with all the emissions rules for Diesels here in the states that just isn't true any more and I know this to be true being the owner of a Cummins 6.7L. Now to meet the EPA rules these engines have a diesel particulate filter to collect the soot we're all use to seeing belching out of diesel trucks. The down side to this process is that in order to clear the filter of this collected soot the filter must reach a temperature in excess of 1000 F to burn it off and how do they get such a high temp you ask? They dump fuel into the exhaust stroke thus raising the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) but also killing your MPG. Take into account that a diesel engine can add between $3,000 to $8,000 to a vehicle's price due to costly components like the turbocharger, the high-pressure fuel-injection system and the complex emissions system I just mentioned, which is filled with precious metals and why would the regular Joe want one? We may have to go back to Horse's in order to tow anything but I unfortunately read that Horse's emit methane which is also a greenhouse gas so go figure?

| This sounds like way back when in the 70's they were doing this to gas engines. at first mfg did cheap things that made the car run worse hoping people would complain and government would rescind. well the japanese come along and make better power meeting the emissions calling them out and now the american engines are far better than they use to be. I think the use of biofuel and some ingenuity will solve this problem |

| I really wanted a diesel for years, but in addition to what Squid posted, you have to take into account the extra cost for scheduled maintenance, (filters, xtra oil for changes, etc), plus the higher cost to have them emission tested here. Unless you use the thing commercially, there doesn't seem to be a break even point when compared to a gas engine, particularly when you factor in that 300k miles on a gas engine isn't rare anymore. Oh well, maybe in the next life................ |

| I find it fascinating that in Europe every car is diesel, more or less. If they can do it, why not here in NA? I thought this blue diesel would help that along but I guess not hehe! What about that other technology or is it one in the same that burns off the filter. I saw on discovery channel, i think, a diesel pick up with a 6 or 8" pipe out the back. Looked really strange!

| Europeans drive small cars with small diesel engines. Even their gas engines are small. If they need to move something, they call movers with a box truck. The majority of the continent has mass transit like crazy. You can live there and not need a car. We have like maybe 10 cities with a mediocre mass transit system. You travel there and you don't go far on small roads. North America went gas because we like powerful, yet quiet, and some hate to see the pollutants even though they are worse than diesel exhaust. Plus we have subsidized gas prices so we don't have to pay the amounts that Europe does. Putting strict emissions on diesel engines is the wrong idea. That means that the average guy has to make multiple trips to carry the same load that he could have done in one load with a 1 ton diesel. |

| I completely agree with the transit system over there. I was amazed at where I could go by train while in Paris. Nothing like that here, except maybe union station in toronto where the subway intersects the rail lines for GO Transit and Via Rail. If I lived in Paris there would be no way I'd have a car hehe! Parking is CRAZY!!!!! |
