The news report I saw said, "The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration issued a wide-ranging recall late today for 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles..." That's the DOT. Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) | U.S. Department of Transportation

This floor mat must be installed correctly to prevent it from moving into the accelerator. Do not use if damaged or the metal loops are missing." It may even include a drawing of a foot with a crumpled floor mat up against a pedal. Soon, every new car sold in America comes with a similar warning.
Well, the original floor mats that came with my Tundra *did* come with a large tag attached to them saying that you shouldn't stack floor mats and to ensure that the original mat is hooked on properly to avoid pedal jamming.

I did end up experiencing a similar issue with sticking pedals because I replaced the OEM carpet-mats with generic rubber ones, but didn't cut them. So out came the tin snips to take a chunk off the corner, and ziptied the whole thing to the seat anchoring brackets to prevent sliding around.

Done Tox on your getting the OEM all-weathers the next we hook up. And, btw, I looked at both my carpeted mats and my OEM all-weather mats, and danged if I can figure out how they would catch the accelerator and keep it floored???

EDIT: Just read that it was a California Highway Patrol officer driving that car.
I had a stuck accerator one time on my old Dodge Ram, the brakes where not enough to bring it to a stop when it was at full throttle, took it down to 25 MPH when I stupidly through it into Park to keep from hitting a car in front of me, thier was a lot of grinding but surprisingly it didn't kill the tranny.

If taking the chance of ruining an transmission to stop a vehicle with a stuck accelerator is stupid...then I'll take stupid every time. I think you made a very smart decision. Just my 2 cents, good recovery.

Did your old Dodge just have crappy brakes? I guess I didn't allow for that. I assume they were drums?
