Limited Slip Differential, how do I tell?

I just bought a used 2006 Tundra SR5 2wd. How do I tell if it has a limited slip differential? Is there some brochures or information out there that tells what is standard versus optional? Can I search the VIN to find out?

Any help, as the 07 and 08 seem to come standard with them, but I can't find any information on the 06 models.

    Thanks.

I tried to find the info on a few car sites. Only one made a reference to an LSD on the gen-1 and suggested it was an option. But I wouldn't trust it if only once source said it.

It is my understanding that the LSD was never standard on the Gen 1, and only available, I believe, as an option the last year or two of Gen 1 production. So, the only ones around would be those that were ordered with that option.

Your insurance company should be able to punch in the VIN and pull up everything standard on the truck.

I would try to spin the tires on the pavement. If you get two black marks, you have a LSD.

My 02 limited had LSD, noticed the diff. had labels on it indicating LSD. The labels were still there when I traded the truck 2 1/2 years later, so might be a chance if yours has LSD the labels may still be there.

    Limited Slip Differential

In the old days you could lift both the rear wheels off the ground (with the front wheels blocked of course) and with the truck in neutral turn one of the tires by hand. If the tire on the opposite side rotated in the same direction you had a "sure grip" or limited slip differential. However, I am not certain that still applies.

I dont think that applies to the Toyota LSD. It uses a brake on the tire that is slipping the most.

one sure way is to get on a patch of slippery pavement (Snow, Ice, Loose Sand) and have 2 friends watch the back wheels when you punch the throttle. If they both report that each side spun, its a good bet you have it. Also, it should make some racket that sounds a lot like anti-lock brakes.
