"VSC off" 4th gear limit

Skip past the first paragraph to read the important stuff.

So I stopped by the dealer today. One of the bolt covers on the driver's side A pillar handle keeps opening up. They ordered me a new one after they tried to fix it. There is also a problem with the rear seatbelts (port leather). One seatbelt sticks about 2 inches above the seat and won't go any lower. The other seatbelt drops down through the bottom and won't stay up in the seat. The high one leaves imprints in the seat back when the seats are folded and the low one disappears under the seat when you try to buckle the seatbelt. I don't think either of them were put in properly.

While I was there, I mentioned that when I have the VSC off, the truck sometimes does not shift past 4th gear. I have to either switch over to S mode and up shift or switch to S mode and then back to drive to get it to work. It's been happening more and more. He said he hadn't heard of the problem before and would have it looked at (along with a rear seatbelt issue) when I could drop it off with them after the new part comes in.

Today I started the truck after lunch, turned the VSC off and drove to a stop light before getting on the interstate. At the light, I switched over to S mode and then back to D to see if I can cancel the problem before it happens. I am behind a slow 18 wheeler getting on the interstate and I punch it to get around him when there is an opening on the interstate in the next lane. I get around him and my engine is really wound up. I let off the gas expecting it to shift and it doesn't. I'm doing 80 and the tach is reading close to 5500 rpm. Not good. I switch it to S mode and back to D and it's OK after that. The other day I was doing about 70 on the interstate and had the same problem. When I switched over to S mode, it went to 3rd gear first instead of 4th gear like it is supposed to. Not good. Supposedly this is a common known issue with Toyota. It's supposed to be a software problem and also exists in their other cars like the Camrys.

If nothing else, at least I will have the issue documented with them should it cause any other kind of problem like a blown engine the way it's going. I have under 900 miles so better to document it now. I know I could just go into S mode and into 6th gear all the time. But the thing is, I shouldn't have to do that every time I drive with the VSC off.

Are you still having this issue Tox?

I haven't experienced anything like this. I've tried every combination with the VSC & Trac in auto and "S" mode with out any issues.

You're not alone. Mine has done this on occasion. I have to shift to S mode and shift up. Mine seems to do it in the same spot when it does happen, on my way home there is a slight hill. I go up it and on the way down it won't shift past 4th.

Yeah, it seems to happen more often now. Before it wouldn't happen very often but now it happens more often than not. I am still waiting for the dealer's call to take the truck in. They are waiting for that A-pillar handle piece to come in before they call.

I've gotten to where I will turn the VSC off and then just go ahead and put it in S6. I got tired of getting on the interstate and then realizing I am going 80+ in 4th gear. I think it was also doing it for 3rd and 5th gear sometimes.

Sometimes I start the truck and then turn the VSC off before I put it in Drive. Other times I put it in drive and then turn off the VSC. I'm not sure what steps are causing it to happen (other than turning VSC off of course). I can always get around the problem by putting it in S6, but I don't always remember to do that.

Try turning the VSC off while in park, That's when I do it and never had this issue.

No problem. Try putting the truck in drive and then turning the VSC off and see if it happens for you.

So I took the truck in to get serviced. Had a couple of cosmetic items they were taking care of under warranty and had them check this transmission problem. The service manager thought maybe it was designed to stop at 4th gear. Um,... no. Another service guy drove the truck yesterday after I dropped it off, but he only turned the traction control off and did not turn the stability control (VSC) off. So obviously he could not recreate the problem. They called and had me come to pick up the truck. I said I would like their guy to ride with me and we will try to recreate the problem and they were happy to do it. We went for a ride and the truck shifted fine. Not a problem at all. I even stopped half way through, restarted the truck and tried again. No problems. So as we drove I explained when it would happen and different ways I tried to get around the problem like VSC off when in park, put in drive and then VSC off, drive to end of driveway and then VSC off, etc. He now knows what I have tried and what I have to do to correct it while driving. I also told him there were a couple of others who reported the same problem occasionally and others who could not repeat the problem. He said it sounds like a software problem (as we all figured) and said he would call one of the Toyota reps and describe the problem to see if they have had any other reports or fixes. I would hear back tomorrow or monday.
