They will want you to reproduce it with one of their techs in the truck cause they have never heard of the problem. So you will have to make an appointment to do that and come again on a different day. Then they will want it reproduced with their computer connected.

Thanks. I actually did a video of the tach/ speedo with my cell phone the last time it happened, but that doesn't help with having a computer connected to the truck.

I couldn't get it to happen when I had the tech in the truck.

Go figure. It's been very repeatable for me in the last week, so hopefully I'll be able to show a tech.

Is the engine/tranny cold when this happens? I notice when I leave for work I have short distance to the highway and my truck never shifts into 6th gear until it is warmed up. Could it be a temperature sensor on the tranny?

Just got back from the dealership. They called up the chain of command and found that I was the 4th person in the region to complain about the refusal to shift above 3rd gear. The thought is that this is a computer error and will require a reflash of the ECU to fix, but until enough people complain about this problem Toyota won't find the error and release a reflash for the tranny. Basically, I was told that this is a known problem, but not enough people have complained so there is not yet a fix for it.

In short, IF YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM GO AND COMPLAIN AT YOUR DEALERSHIP! HECK, EVEN IF YOU HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM YOU PROBABLY STILL HAVE IT AND SHOULD GO COMPLAIN AT YOUR DEALERSHIP SO WE CAN GET IT FIXED!!

I've experienced the very same problem when deactivating the VSC. I will report it to my dealer upon my next visit. Hopefully they will recognize the issue and issue a service bulletin before the next generation model arrives!

Does this only happen when the engine and tranny are cold?

It can happen anytime. If you put the truck in S6, then it will work fine.
