well for me i just recently changed my muffler over the weekend and resetted the battery and suprised my gas guage hasn't move fast as it used too when i bought the truck about 3 weeks ago. i went with the 50 series flowmaster suv/truck performance dumped down after i put on the volant cai it should get a little better

I just finished my first tank of gas after installing the scangauge. I managed 19.75mpg with about a 50/50 mix of city and highway. I think I might have done a little better than that actually. I wasn't able to use the same pump as my previous fillup, and I noticed the needle seemed farther past the full mark than before, so we'll see how it goes. I did have to adjust the fuel estimate about 9% when I filled up.

I got 376 miles on this tank, and the fill light hadn't come on yet. My previous best tank had the fill light come on at 380 and that tank was all highway miles. I think with a little more practice I'll be able to get 20 fairly regularly. The two main things I do differently now, are drive a little faster (I'll explain later), and coast to stops in neutral when possible.

First, the drive faster part. I was under the misconception that being in a higher gear moving slower and doing fewer RPMs would give me better mileage. I often would get up to about 45 where the truck would go into overdrive and then slow down a few mph when in a 40mph zone. This actually gives noticeably fewer mpgs. It turns out that keeping the truck near 1500 rpm and avoiding the shift by staying at 43-44mph is significantly more fuel efficient. A similar thing happens for me in 60mph zones. Turns out it's better to drive about 65mph and keep a very steady foot. I've seen the SG stay pegged at 25-26mpg on level ground at that speed.

The coasting in neutral thing is obviously a fuel saver, but I think it really helps on short sections of road. I now travel down the street in front of my house by getting up to about 20mph and going into neutral. I easily make it all the way down the street to the stop sign and any more speed than that is really wasting fuel. It's kind of funny how your perception of time changes when you're going a little slower than usual coasting down the road. It seems like you're giving up a lot of time, but it turns out to be just a few seconds here and there.

Anyway, I was using neutral coasting before, but I was probably more aware of it on this tank. So I'm not sure how much of my improvement was due to that, but my last best tank without the SG in a 50/50 mixed scenario was 18.5mpg. So I am at least getting a 1mpg improvement if not more.

It looks like it will take a little over year for the scangauge to pay for itself at current gas prices assuming no further improvements. I think it was a pretty good investment.

I'm wondering if I should disconnect the battery and let the ECU relearn my new driving habits, or if it will do that on it's own. I think I'll just leave well enough alone for a couple more tanks and see. If I can get 20mpg on a regular basis in this truck I'll be very happy.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I did have to step on it a couple of times during this tank, and I was caught in some stop and go as well, so this was no best case scenario.

Nice results and a good write up on your maximizing fuel mileage Kevo. I wouldn't think you would need to reset the truck computer solely for changing your driving habits, although it might take it a few tanks to do so. I did find that resetting the computer helped on my CAI after I noticed a significant drop in fuel mileage, but admittedly, I had some install issues with the Volant fender gasket and MAF sensor gasket that may have caused this drop, and after I fixed them I wanted to have the computer get a clean start on the CAI, and it seems to have worked.

I've been using mine purely as a hauler and towtruck for my trailers since last summer. I got 15 mpg today with about half pulling a trailer and the rest split between 1500lbs in the back and getting to the feed mill. I thought that was amazingly good. I'm only having to fill up like once a month now, sucker should last forever. I actually washed it and got an inch of dust out of the interior.

im only getting 160 miles on a full tank, its like 8 mpg i think it comes out to...sucks but that what u get when i lift your truck and add a bunch of upgrades. im still happy though with the truck, just make sure you have extra money for gas fill ups every couple of days haha

No jack rabbit starting and stopping in a 5000 pound truck helps. Also , don't use cruise control on hilly or mountainous terrain especially when towing. It's electronic and when it senses a slow down it will automatically accelerate up to pre-determined speed.
