Improve Fuel Economy ?

Anyone found a way to improve their fuel economy with the 5.7L, other than keeping your foot out of the pedal !

Slow down and quit sitting just idling in drive-thru lines.

.............SLOW DOWN! Left this Friday past to visit my 81 year old mother for the weekend. Set the cruise control at 65 mph for the entire trip. First stop, 218 miles & 9.4 gals = 23.19 mpg (flat ground and decreasing elavation first half of trip). Second stop and reached destination, 237 miles & 10.8 gals = 21.94 mpg (Texas hill country). Return home today, Sunday and third stop, 209 miles & 9.8 gals = 21.33 mpg (still in hill country and increasing elavation). Fourth stop and reached destination, 219 miles & 9.5 gals = 23.05 mpg (back to flat ground and increasing elavation). 883 miles and 39.5 gals round trip, cruise set at 65 = 22.35 mpg average. These numbers have made a believer out of me.......it's worth slowing down.

Yes, I was the slowest one on the highway. In each leg of my trip I increased my speed to the posted speed limit for 5 miles and set the cruise control, just to see if others were obeying the speed limit. Yep, I was still the slowest one on the highway, being passed left and right with the cruise set at the posted speed limit. Increased travel time is just not that much more but I do believe the fuel savings is worth it. Anyhow, just thought I would post my observations/results.

Last Observed ?

My last two measured trips on open road, with one stop each way for food/rest, and 5-15 miles on each end of city traffic, netted no more than 16.5 MPG, per tank. Each tank had only about 208-216 miles on it, with gauge showing slightly above to midway between 1/4 and 1/2 tank available. My in-town mileage has dropped to low 12's to upper 13's, with no agressive driving on my part.. ?Would like to hear some others inputs. My 5.7L 08 only has about 2800 miles on it right now. Long-Bed, Club Cab 4x4.......

HOLY COW! 22ish mpg with the 5.7! That's pretty darn good. I'm only averaging 15-16 with the 4.7. Time to slow down I guess. Thanks for the info.

Up to this point on my 2007 Extended cab with 5.7 I have been averaging 17 - 17.5 mpg. I don't pay attention to the Average MPG on the display as it is wrong. I calculate miles driven and fuel used on fillup. I have been running just at the speedlimit the past couple tankfulls - my mileage has increased 2-3 mpg treating the fuel peddle like it was an eggshell.

I know this is somewhat risky, but the few times I've been tucked up behind an 18 wheeler (but not too close), with my display set on instantaneous mpg, I have seen 21-22 mpg... otherwise, with a good tail wind, or like djb, staying at 60-65 mph, it results in much better gas mileage. Only problem is I tend to get itchy driving 60 or 65 and I have this constant urge to drive faster, lol!

I honestly believe just eliminating drive-thrus (bank, burgers, etc.) will improve ones mpg......I sure have. I also believe most traffic lights are synchronized to the posted speed limit.......imagine that, so why hurry up and wait.

People, turn those freakin' diesel p/u's off when you stop somewhere..........$5/gal., the noise and the stinch........GEEEEEZZZZZZ!.

Does anyone know if you would get better gas mileage switching out the the rear end gears?? Do they even make one to drop the rpms lower?

A few have said it definitely helped, a few others have said the jury is still out.
